We are Family……

Ephesians 5:21–33 NRSV
Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, be subject to your husbands as you are to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife just as Christ is the head of the church, the body of which he is the Savior. Just as the church is subject to Christ, so also wives ought to be, in everything, to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word, so as to present the church to himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind—yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish. In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hates his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, because we are members of his body. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, and I am applying it to Christ and the church. Each of you, however, should love his wife as himself, and a wife should respect her husband.
Ephesians 6:1–4 NRSV
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—this is the first commandment with a promise: “so that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
——-——
I wanted to read this entire section because too often I feel it is cherry picked and certain parts are used as leverage against those that we are supposed to love and care for the most.
We will read and quote the parts that we need to when it is convenient and let the parts that apply to us go unread.
But let’s start at the beginning
Ephesians 5:21 NRSV
Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.
—> are we all under the same understanding?
—> house rules
—> we all have to be willing to play under the same rules
—> Christ is FIRST
—> If we don’t establish none of the rest of this matters
—> reverence here is the word “phobo or phobos” — meaning you can probably guess. A profound respect and awe for deity
—> our spouse, our kids, our family, should not be the center of our lives or worship. Jesus Christ should be.
Wives-
Ephesians 5:22–24 NRSV
Wives, be subject to your husbands as you are to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife just as Christ is the head of the church, the body of which he is the Savior. Just as the church is subject to Christ, so also wives ought to be, in everything, to their husbands.
—> This could easily say “Wives, see verse above.”
—> Paul, is simply reiterating what he has already said.
husbands-
Ephesians 5:25–33 NRSV
—> love your wives…just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…
—> let’s be clear about “the church” Paul is talking about ALL believers everywhere not a building, not a single 501 c3 corporation, the church is the people.
—> Jesus, gave everything for the church, even his very life.
—> Everything Jesus did was to benefit the people, it was to help them understand how to live, and how to love. He did all of it to show his love for us.
—> NO alteerier motives, just love for us, a people that stumble and fall, that get it wrong more times than we care to admit
—> Yet, Jesus still loves us and died for us
—> Husbands, how else are we to love our wives?
—> life we love our own bodies,
remember last week…
we talked about knowing ourselves and getting to the bottom of who we are.
same thing here, if we love our wives we are going to know who they are
Ephesians 5:33 NRSV
Each of you, however, should love his wife as himself, and a wife should respect her husband.
Husbands if you are truly loving your wife like this, like Christ, and wives if you are loving Christ, it should be easy to respect a husband like this.
Children-
Ephesians 6:1–4 NRSV
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—this is the first commandment with a promise: “so that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
—> Again, we must start at the beginning, with Christ as the center.
—> parents if you aren’t keeping Christ as the center of your life don’t expect your kids to keep Christ at the center of theirs.
—> Everything we have talked about hangs on that.
—> Kids I’m going to make this as simple as I can
—> If you love Jesus you should love your parents
—> If you know to do the right things at church and at school you should do them at home.
—> Parents, we aren’t perfect, we will make mistakes
—> Ask yourself these things?
—> Am I loving my kids like I love myself?
Am I teaching them the things of God?
Is Christ at the center of all that we do as a family?
