Author: 2 Timothy 1

2 Timothy 2:1–7 KJV 1900
1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. 3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. 5 And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully. 6 The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits. 7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.
Who is the author?
Paul is the author of this book.
We see in verse 1 the familiar introduction given in many of the other books written by Paul.
Timothy is the spiritual son of Paul in the faith. (2)

Parents (5)

Paul does not take the whole credit for Timothy’s faith.
Timothy’s grandmother and mother are responsible for much of his faith.

How did Paul classify Timothy’s faith?

What of Lois and Eunice’s faith?

What is implied by “unfeigned faith” or “sincere faith” in these three people?

Unfeigned Faith or Sincere Faith means an acceptance of the message.

What is the message of this faith?

Acceptance is related to Confession.
Romans 10:9 KJV 1900
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Faith is a historical possibility.
Galatians 3:25–29 KJV 1900
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

What are ways of believing?

Since faith involves confession and obedience, it is a state as well as an act.

We can have the faith: Romans 14:22

Romans 14:22 KJV 1900
22 Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.
What is important about having faith to yourself?
Our faith is personal, before God and not before men.
We can be in the faith. 2 Corinthians 13:5
2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV 1900
5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
What is important about being in the faith?
How do we know we are in the faith?
We are in the faith because we have confessed and are obedient.

We can stand in the faith. 1 Corinthians 16:13

1 Corinthians 16:13 KJV 1900
13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.
1 Thessalonians 3:8 KJV 1900
8 For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.
Romans 5:2 KJV 1900
2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
What are some requirements for standing in faith?
What are some benefits of standing in faith?

There are degrees of faith

1 Thessalonians 3:10 KJV 1900
10 Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?
2 Corinthians 10:15 KJV 1900
15 Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
What are some important things to know about your faith?

Weak Faith

Romans 14:1–2 KJV 1900
1 Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. 2 For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
Romans 14:23 KJV 1900
23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
Romans 12:3 KJV 1900
3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
What should we understand the strength of faith?
What action should we take in faith?

Work of faith

1 Thessalonians 1:3 KJV 1900
3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
What is a work of faith?
Galatians 5:6 KJV 1900
6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Why is it important to remember faith that works by love?

For homework, let write out a statement of your faith. What was life like before coming to faith, when you came to faith, and your life after you came to faith, what has changed.

Please explain your answer.
