The sermon centers on the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, as told in John 4:5-14. It seeks to relate the children's experiences of physical thirst to the concept of spiritual thirst. It emphasizes the gift of God, which is the Living Water the Holy Spirit. And it provides context for the belief necessary to receive the Living Water.

Introduction (2 minutes)
Have you ever felt so thirsty on a hot day and took a big gulp of cold water? How refreshing was that?
Transition to Theme: Today, we’re going to learn about a very special kind of water that Jesus talked about. It’s not the water drink from your glass, but a special water for our hearts
Reading of the Word (3 minutes)
John 4:5–14 KJV 1900
Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
Prayer
Jesus and the Samaritan Woman (4 minutes)
Jesus’ journey John 4:5 “Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.”
Labored LORD John 4:6–7 “Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.”
Sixth hour = noon
Samaria built on a hill 1 Kings 16:24 “And he bought the hill Samaria of Shemer for two talents of silver, and built on the hill, and called the name of the city which he built, after the name of Shemer, owner of the hill, Samaria.”
He was thirsty Matthew 25:35 “For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:”
Wayward Woman (see b^)
She’s Samaritan - Jews and Samaritans don’t get along (2 Kings 17:24–28 )
She’s alone - women in those days usually came to draw water together
She’s wearied from sin - Jesus points out her 5 husbands
John 4:18 “For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.”
The Two Types of Water (4 minutes)
Well Water - Drink it, and soon you’re thirsty again
John 4:13 “Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:”
So is the case with anything we find in this world that seems to refresh us. After a while, it stops being fun, it stops being fulfilling, we thirst for something else…we desire different water.
Be careful to not chase this type of water in life, it never completely satisfies
Living Water - drink it and never thirst again
John 4:14 “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”
The Living Water Is “the gift from God”
John 4:10 “Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.”
The Living Water is the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit -
Lives within us
1 Corinthians 3:16 “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”
Comforts us when we are lonely
John 14:16 “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;”
Teaches us all things
John 14:26 “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
Convicts us of Sin
John 16:8 “And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:”
Sanctifies and Renews us
2 Thessalonians 2:13 “But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:”
Titus 3:5 “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”
Guarantees are Salvation
Ephesians 1:13–14 “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”
John 7:39 “(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”
Jesus gives it to us when we believe in Him
John 7:38 “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”
The Transformation of the Samaritan Woman
She believed Jesus
John 4:29 “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
John 7:41 “Others said, This is the Christ.
And received the Living water
no matter who we are - Samaritan, Sinner, or Saint, Jesus’ gift of the Living Water is for us too - if we believe in Him
