This morning we are going to jump back into the book of Romans. Anyone remember where we left off? Bonus points if you do. On November 26th I was able to get to Romans 9:29. So this morning we will pick up there but before we do I have a few house keeping items.
Amy has surgery on Tuesday so be praying for us this week. At the end of the service, I will be down front praying and you are welcome to come pray over us for this week.
The second thing is many of you currently the number is 40 are joining us as a church to read through the Bible. This is something I will keep talking about all year long.
Jackie come up here for just a second. Jackie serves all of us by cleaning the restrooms so we get to talk at times. She has been willing to share with me some of her thoughts as she reads through the Bible and I think it would be helpful for her to share some of those thoughts with you so that we can all grow and learn together.
You did not grow up attending church or Sunday School as a child?
You shared with me that you feel ashamed with how little knowledge you have of the Bible.
Jackie how do you feel about commenting on the Bible app?
I wanted her to share because I know Jackie is not the only one that the enemy is attacking in this way as we make an effort to read through the Bible this year together.
This morning we jump back in to the book of Romans and it has taken me some time to reorient myself to where we were in the book.
At the beginning of Romans 9 Paul is laying out the argument that not all who are born of Physical descent are a part of the promise and some who are not born of physical descent are a part of the promise.
We worked through the difficult passages in this chapter and I compared them to Calc 1 and Calc 2 because of the challenges they present. In these challenges we looked at Pharaoh and we saw how at times Pharaoh hardened his heart and at times God hardened Pharaoh’s heart. Our finite minds try to make sense of this.
We saw that both in God’s Sovereignty and man’s freewill that God uses all things for good.
When a man asked Charles Spurgeon how he reconciled divine sovereignty and human responsibility, Spurgeon replied:
“I never try to reconcile friends!”

Let me finish setting up today’s text by showing this video as today is Super Bowl Sunday.

The Bible Exposition Commentary (Chapter Nine: The Wrong Righteousness (Romans 10))
Law of Righteousness Faith Righteousness
Only for the Jew For “whosoever”
Based on works Comes by faith alone
Self-righteousness God’s righteousness
Cannot save Brings salvation
Obey the Lord Call on the Lord
Leads to pride Glorifies God
Romans 9:30 HCSB
30 What should we say then? Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained righteousness—namely the righteousness that comes from faith.
Gentiles are the outsiders. They are being brought in because of Jesus. They were not people born of family descent.
Righteousness or covenant membership
Romans 9:31 HCSB
31 But Israel, pursuing the law for righteousness, has not achieved the righteousness of the law.
Israel: The do gooders (They followed the law 631 laws) Was it wrong for them to follow the law? NO
The Law leads us to Jesus
Righteousness = Covenant membership
Romans 9:32 HCSB
32 Why is that? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.
Why have they not achieved covenant membership?
Because they did no pursue i by faith but by works
They are stumbling over the stone that is meant to save them and all the Law pointed to. The whole of the Old Testament points to Jesus the Messiah and Jesus is the One they are stumbling over.
Romans 9:33 HCSB
33 As it is written: Look! I am putting a stone in Zion to stumble over and a rock to trip over, yet the one who believes on Him will not be put to shame.
He then quotes Isaiah 28:16 and shows that going all the way back to Isaiah the promise is the same that Jesus the Messiah would come and some would stumble over the Messiah
The one who believes will not be put to shame.
Romans 10:1 HCSB
1 Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God concerning them is for their salvation!
The do gooders is for their Salvation!
I would express that same desire for anyone who is trapped in a life style or religion that is only about doing good and you believe Salvation is solely based upon your performance that today you would hear the good news of what Jesus has done for you and you would be set free.
Romans 10:2 HCSB
2 I can testify about them that they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
Zeal can be on fire, passion, desire
NT Wright says here
Zeal is Holy Violence
Romans 10:3 HCSB
3 Because they disregarded the righteousness from God and attempted to establish their own righteousness, they have not submitted themselves to God’s righteousness.
What is the righteousness from God?
Jesus
Attempted to establish their own righteousness
The Law (YOU ARE RUNNING THE WRONG DIRECTION)
How often I have attempted to do this? What ways do I do this?
Romans 10:4 HCSB
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
Christ is the GOAL of the law
Christ is the right direction. The Laws end Goal is not the Law.
The Laws end Goal is Christ
This does not mean that the Law is bad because it is not the Goal. It led us to the end so the law is good. It got us to where we needed to be. The law revealed that we needed a Savior that we could not on our own attempt keep the whole law. We failed and we need a perfect sacrifice to cleanse us. We need Jesus.
What can we learn from this?
I want to learn from the Israelites the do gooders. I don’t want to repeat their mistakes. I want see the mistakes they made and then move forward.
So they attempted to establish their own righteousness. In what ways in my life have I attempted to establish my own righteousness.
I sometimes create my own laws of what it means to be a Christ follower. I allow shame to run rampant and believe I am unworthy rather than practicing the way of Jesus daily.
Shout the good news of Jesus from the roof top. Raise the roof on the goodness of Jesus. Share of his goodness. Shame has no hold on you, Unforgiveness no hold on you, guilt no hold on you,
