Going Public
Secret religion versus outrageous love
Sermon Title: “Going Public”
Text: Mark 5:21-40
Subject: Public faith
ETS- Jesus defeated death and sickness through public faith.
ESS- We must have public faith because of Jesus victory over death and sickness.
OSS- Hearers will display faith outside of the church walls this week.
FCF-Because it is easier to keep JESUS to ourselves we must live our faith ON A daily basis wherever we are at.
Intro:
Hide it under a bushel no I’m going to let it shine. Hide it under a bushel no I am going to let it shine.
What I found true about this song is also true in marriage.
Progression of meeting Heather to going public with her.
Scene 1-When we first met at a retreat I thought heather was beautiful. And like any guy my first impression was she is out of my league. I will not even tell anyone else about my interest because she will shut me down. She told me she thought she was on 60 minutes because I asked her so many questions.
Scene 2-About a year later I moved to the same town as heather and we became good friends and we started hanging out. Even to the point where I thought there was some interest in the relationship. But I was still not ready to go public with it because she made it clear one night that she was not interested in me. She told me she was content with Jesus and not interested in a relationship with me.
Scene 3-But like all women she changed her mind. Once we began dating I began to tell people we were dating, but not everyone because there was still a chance of failure that she would break up with me. My good friends.
Scene 4-But then when I knew I was going to ask her to marry me I knew that I was going to ask her to marry me we told everyone, and then there was the day that we stood before all of our friends and family and we committed our lives to one another.
Today when I am investing in my relationship with Heather
But what I have found in marriage is that the more connected I am to my wife throughout the week the stronger our relationship is still. We have all seen marriages where the couple has been married for 50+ years and they are still deeply in love and unafraid to tell anyone about their spouse. However, we have also seen those relationships that are multiple years where the spouses cannot stand each other, they talk about sports, the weather, politics, but not necessarily their spouse. When we have a great relationship with someone whether it’s a spouse, friend, co-worker etc. we like to talk about them, they are important to us. In the same way marriage and relationships work, our relationship with Jesus CHRIST WORKS AS WELL.
God created us to live our faith outside the church walls.
1. Public faith stays desperate for it’s first love (21-24)
21:When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore.22One of the synagogue officials named Jairus *came up, and on seeing Him, *fell at His feet 23and *implored Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; pleasecome and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live.”24 And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.
News spread Jesus had just calmed the wind and the sea and the Crowds Gathered. People wanted to see him, the crowds were gathering.
And now a situation was going on that that was not the way things are supposed to be. A son was going to have to bury his daughter.
How does one approach Jesus?
a. Unafraid of others opinion
Who he was
Now I want you to observed something about Jairius what he does here is not an easy thing. Especially for someone who has been in a religious setting his whole life as a leader. Jairius was distinguished and this could be a huge problem to come to Jesus
Now there was a man there who would have been like the top deacon at First Baptist Dallas.
“The ruler of the synagogue was the president of the board of elders—the rulers—who were over the affairs of the local synagogue. Page 139-Hiebert”
contrast to this man because you would expect it from him
Illustration:
At Church {FBC} a drunk guy who knows how he came there and he was bawling uncontrollably-he was desperate.
This would not be a typical response from someone of his stature.
How does one approach Jesus?
b. Confident that he will listen to our prayers
How does one approach Jesus?
c. Confident that he can cure death
Application:
How do you approach Jesus when no one else is looking? Do you spend time with him: in his word and in prayer? I mean really spend time.
Are you willing to risk religious ridicule and public embarrassment by kneeling at Jesus feet and begging him to come to your home?
2. Public faith knows one touch of the king is where real health and wealth is found (25-34).
Dad moving junk-
25A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, 26and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse—27 after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.28For she thought, “If I just touch His garments, I will get well.”29 Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.30Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceedingfrom Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?”31And His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”32And He looked around to see the woman who had done this.33But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.”
Sin has created a world of brokenness
How are we broken like this lady?
a. Physically uncurable-She had an illness-Even the most fit person in here will deteriorate one day
b. Unclean Spiritually-They saw this woman and ceremonialy unclean which meant she could not go tinto worship services, compare this to us we are all unclean because of sin.
c. Financially-Spent all her money-No matter how rich or poor you are God owns it all
All this resulted in no hope
We can’t live without hope. All of us have hope in something.
Illustration-Shawshank Redemption
He had hope that he would be free from Prison one day.
The Hope of the gospel is that God has saved your from sin and that because of what he has done he saves you and makes you clean [Justification], and then he will save you as you walk this earth and make you like Jesus [Sanctification] and ultimately he will save us from good [this is called sanctification.
Because of her situation she decided to place her faith in Jesus-
Application
What can we learn from this lady about faith:
a. Her faith lead her to just want one touch.
When is the last time you wanted to just have one touch from Jesus?
One of the reasons I think we don’t have this desperation is because we think once we become believers we arrive.
Quote from gospel book in office.
What can we learn from this lady about faith:
b. Not having all the answers did not keep her from Jesus
She thought she had to touch Jesus and stay quiet about it and not tell anyone. Almost like she had to be ashamed of coming towards Jesus. In reality she was supposed to come to him and be unashamed of it. Now let’s be honest she had a lot to be ashamed of from a social perspective, she had been rejected by society the whole time she was sick.
What can we learn from this lady about faith:
c. She went public with her new identity-He called her daughter only time Jesus calls someone a daughter.
Jesus was not wanting to humiliate her or make it awkward. This lady who no one wanted to be around was now whole and heal and connected to the Messiah.
Many times we came to church and hear a sermon and think about all the things we have to do. But God wants us to know who we are before he tells us what to do.
“He asked not because of ignorance but to bring the one that touched into personel communion with the one touched.” Page 144-Hiebert
Illustration-Tony Ecans story where a white man came to Jesus in need of healing now it was revealed at his work. He ends up sharing with a black man-the gospel crosses over race.
3. Public faith believes Jesus can defeat even death (35-43).
Leader at North Korea-He died
35While He was still speaking, they *came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?”36But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, *said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid any longer, only believe.” 37And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James.38They *came to the house of the synagogue official; and He *saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing.39And entering in, He *said to them, “Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep.”40They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He *took along the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and *entered the room where the child was.41Taking the child by the hand, He *said to her, “Talitha kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).42Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded.43And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that somethingshould be given her to eat.
I don’t know how Jairuis is feeling but he is probably a little frustrated. Here I come to Jesus boldly and confidently and when he is about to heal my daughter she is dead.
How do we confidently believe the gospel?
a. We must keep believing it- “Be not afraid, only believe”-both imperatives are presents tense, denoting continuous action. Hiebert page 147” This may be a better place to put the quote from gospel book.
Illustration-Already-Not yet.
b. Know that we are believing something that is historically accurate. One of the things you can miss in the gospel is that Jesus is always training his disciples. It is what he does. He knows that when he dies that they will be the ones to take the gospel even further. But notice here he brings three with him: why not only to train them but also to validate that this woman was dead and that she is now alive. We know that everyone thought she was dead because they had paid mourners there. [Try to make them picture what this looked like].”Their mockery also proves that they were certain the girl had died and confirms the reality of the miracle of her resurrection. Hiebert page 149” Jesus has authority over death we see it here and then we see it ultimately in the resurrection where not only the disciples see him after he defeated death but also 500 others.
c. Believe God’s Word. The people were saying she is dead but Jesus says his word has the final authority.
One thing I have learned in our relationship with God we need to be honest with him. WE don’t need to sugar coat things if we are frustrated we need to tell him how we feel. He is God he can handle it.
Jesus has authority and victory over a lot of things in the book of Mark and right here we are reminded that he has authority over death. We live in a culture where we like to deny death. We want to pretend it is not there, but it is all around us there is no way we can deny it. These mourners show us how serious it is. This is the essence of the gospel, that sin has brought about death: first spiritually and then will affect us physically and that Jesus died on the cross to pay the death penalty that we owe.
