Luke 22:14-30...
Luke 22:14-30...
Thomas Watson wrote in “The Doctrine Of Repentance”..... “Although repentance MUST be always kept alive in the soul---there are two special times when we must renew our repentance in an extraordinary manner:
Before receiving the Lord’s Supper. This spiritual Passover is to be eaten with bitter herbs. Now our eyes should be fresh broached with tears, and the stream of sorrow overflow. A repenting frame is a sacramental frame. A broken heart and a broken Christ do well agree. The more bitterness we taste in sin----the more sweetness we shall taste in Christ!
Thomas Watson went on to write that “Christ will say to the humble penitent, as He did to Thomas.....John 20:27 “Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.”
When we partake of His Supper, as He has told us to do and we do it rightly, with the repentant heart then we are saying as Thomas did.....John 20:28 “And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.”
John 6:47-58...........This was a hard saying to the people around and many left because of this!
Jesus explains this in John 6:63 “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”
To understand our passage we must understand this...........The spirit is what the reality of living, it is not in the flesh........What Jesus has spoken is spiritual and it is our only way to eternal life!
However, it is just as extreme as eating flesh and drinking blood!
The reality of the reason why Jesus came to give us eternal life is horrifying and yet glorious!
Horrifying in the nastiness of our own sin
Glorious in that Jesus came to redeem us from that condition!
So, in the extreme nature that Jesus presented this to everyone is real spiritually!
Jesus was speaking in a spiritual sense.......the belief that the finished work of Jesus Christ was enough to cleanse us spotless before God and His resurrection grants us entrance into the eternal family of God!
1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
Was Jesus speaking of “Communion” here.........No........
But as a partaker of what Jesus eventually instituted, we see the importance of this sacrament!
It has nothing to do with eating flesh and drinking blood.....it has everything to do with what Jesus said in John 6:54–55 “Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.”
The person and work of Jesus Christ is our only sustenance for the spiritual life!
We are dying physically and eternally because of sin..........The eternal death is as final as final can be and it begins at the physical death if we do not believe in Jesus as our Savior and Lord!
Finally, as we read this past Wed. night in Romans 12........It was revealing in that fact that we are not as good as we think we are, but it also reminds me of how precious the blood of Jesus Christ is to me a sinner.....
1 John 2:1 “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:”
1 Corinthians 11:17-34........
Washing the feet of the saints.....................John 13:1-17
