INTRODUCTION

New Series: Absolutes

WHO HAS BEEN TO HOPECITY INTRO IN THE PAST 2 YEARS?
3 VIDEOS - ABC’S OF CHRISTIAN FAITH
THIS SERIES IS THE “A” ABSOLUTES OF CHRISTIAN FAITH

SLIDE: WHAT IS ABSOLUTE TO CHRISTIAN FAITH?

SOMETHING THAT STANDS ON ITS OWN; OTHER BELIEFS ARE BUILT UPON THEM.
AN ABSOLUTE IS FOUNDATIONAL AND IRREFUTABLE.
ABSOLUTE TOPIC: THE DIVINITY OF JESUS
OR WE BELIEVE JESUS IS GOD

TRANSITION: TO BE A CHRISTIAN IS TO BELIEVE JESUS IS GOD. JESUS ADDRESSES THIS BELIEF IN MATTHEW 16:15

READ: MATTHEW 16:15 [ESV]

SLIDE: WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?

THIS QUESTION REVEALS A PROBLEM IN ALL OF US

HOW MUCH OF GOD WAS JESUS DURING HIS MINISTRY ON THE EARTH?
HOW MUCH OF MAN WAS JESUS DURING HIS MINISTRY ON THE EARTH?

THE CHRISTIAN ANSWER TO BOTH OF THESE QUESTIONS IS: YES

IF WE’RE NOT CAREFUL WE WILL MAKE JESUS IN OUR OWN IMAGE…

TALLADEGA NIGHTS TABLE SCENE

EACH PERSON SHARES (RIDICULOUSLY) HOW THEY IMAGINE JESUS WHEN THEY PRAY.

THIS SCENE IS NOT FAR FROM THE TRUTH OF HOW PEOPLE THINK ABOUT JESUS.

WHO IS DEFINING JESUS FOR YOU?

TIKTOK SAYS JESUS IS

YOUTUBE HAS A VIDEO THAT SAID THE COUNCIL OF NICEA MADE THIS UP

A LEADING NEW TESTAMENT SCHOLAR (WHO HAPPENS TO BE AT A UNIVERSITY IN NC) TEACHES THAT THE DISCIPLES LATER WROTE IN THAT JESUS IS GOD.

TRANSITION: MY GOAL IS NOT TO GIVE AN EXHAUSTIVE ANSWER, BUT SOME EFFECTIVE TOOLS TO UNDERSTAND WHY WE BELIEVE JESUS IS GOD.

SLIDE: HOW DID WE COME TO BELIEVE THIS?

ANSWER: BECAUSE JESUS SAID HE IS GOD.

SLIDE: HANDS SLIDE

EXAMPLES AND COMMENTARY

READ MATTHEW 7:21-22 [ESV]

LORD, LORD

THE NEW TESTAMENT IS OVERWHELMINGLY WRITTEN IN GREEK.
THE GREEK TRANSLATION OF THE HEBREW BIBLE EXCLUSIVELY REPLACES THE DIVINE NAME, YAHWEH, WITH THE DESIGNATION “LORD, LORD.”
THERE IS NEVER AN INSTANCE IN THE SEPTUAGINT WHERE LORD, LORD IS USED FOR ANYONE OTHER THAN GOD.

READ MARK 2:1-12 [ESV]

FORGIVENESS OF SINS

VS 7

READ LUKE 8:39 [ESV]

TELL WHAT GOD HAS DONE FOR YOU

SUMMARIZE THE STORY [HIPOS]
THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE SURFACE READING.
JESUS SAYS TELL HOW MUCH “THEOS” HAS DONE AND THE NEXT LINE COULD HAVE BEEN AMBIGUIOUS AND SAID “HE WENT AWAY PROCLAIMING HOW MUCH HE (GOD) HAD DONE” BUT LUKE IS SPECIFIC TO CLARIFY THE TESTIMONY OF THIS MAN IS WHAT JESUS HAD DONE. IN THE GREEK IT HAS BOTH THE WORD THEOS FOR GOD AND JESUS NAME TOGETHER.

READ JOHN 8:51 [ESV]

KEEPS MY WORD

CROSS REF TO PSALM 119:105-107 [ESV]
JESUS CLAIMED HIS TEACHINGS ARE EQUAL TO GOD’S WORD
HEBREW LETTER NUN = SERVANT

LISTEN TO THIS FAMILIAR PASSAGE IN LIGHT OF THIS CLAIM

READ HEBREWS 12:1-2 [ESV]

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

TRANSITION: JESUS IS THE FOUNDER AND PERFECTER OF OUR FAITH. JESUS IS GOD WHO PUT ON FLESH AND DWELT AMONG US.

CONCLUSION

THIS BELIEF IS AN ABSOLUTE TO OUR FAITH BECAUSE IF JESUS IS ONLY A MAN THEN WE ARE STILL DEAD IN OUR SINS.

IF HE WAS ONLY A MAN, THEN HIS DEATH ON THE CROSS, HIS BLOOD SHED FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF THE SINS OF THE WORLD IS NOT ETERNAL. IT IS NO DIFFERENT THAN THE BLOOD OF BULLS AND RAMS OFFERED.

HEBREW 10:9-10 SAYS:

then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

HOW DO WE RESPOND?

JESUS ASKS US: WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?

TODAY I INVITE YOU TO PLACE OUR FAITH IN JESUS, WHO IS GOD.

FAITH IN JESUS THAT IN HIM WE ARE MADE RIGHT BEFORE GOD.

NOT THE JESUS YOU’VE IMAGINED HIM TO BE OR THAT OTHERS HAVE DEFINED FOR YOU.

JESUS, REVEALED IN THE BIBLE, VINDICATED AS GOD BY HIS RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD, WHO FORGIVES OUR SINS AND HAS JUSTIFIED US BEFORE GOD.

JESUS INVITES US TO ANSWER THE QUESTION WITH OUR WORDS AND OUR LIVES.
