Sermon Title: “The Greatest of all time”
Text: Mark 5:1-20
Subject: Jesus Freeing Man
Intro:
Who is the greatest of all time? (Don’t Rush it). Muhammad Ali said I am the greatest. This is a debate that has gone on in sports. Growing up I always argued that it was my favorite player Magic Johnson. Even though I am right on this most basketball fans would say it is Michael Jordan. What constitutes the greatest of all time. They win, they are dominate and who they beat.
I have a friend who is into MMA. Many would argue that Anderson Silva is the greatest of all time. In one fight he was fighting Victor Belfort and knocked him out with one kick. Another time he knocked out a great fighter with one punch. Not only did he dominate it is how he dominated.
But today we are going to see that Jesus is the greatest of all time. From this story we are going to see that he does not just defeat Satan, through his demon legion, he TKO Satan for good.
Of course for my first sermon I get to preach here I get the demon passage.
We have seen this so far in the book of Mark-
He has authority to call the disciples
He has authority over sickness
He has authority to forgive sins
He has authority over the wind and the seas.
Today we are going to see proof that Jesus is Lord over Satan and his demons.
James 4:7 Tells us that if we flee satan and his influences he will flee us.
Even though Jesus does have authority and victory over evil, we have to acknowledge that evil is a very real and serious issue that we deal with every day.
Just turn on the news and we are reminded about evil: a shooting a kidnapping, the list goes on and on and on. We see it in War, in the series a band of brothers the episode is titled, “why we fight.” In this episode, they get to a concentrations camp and these Jewish men and woman have been treated worse than dogs, they had been locked up in cages without food and shelter. They are hardly recognizable. But if we want to get really personal evil is something that all of us struggle with. Whether it is through lusting after the wrong theses, the white lies we tell, the gossip we tell evil is something real that we war with. Today we are going to see that even though Jesus TKO’s Satan there are things we need to be warned about so that we can live in Jesus victory. So today we are going to see three warnings that we need to heed so that we can live in this victory.
Even though Jesus gets the victory there are some reminders that we need to remember about Satan and his demons, because God wants us to live in his victory:
Before I get into these reminders I want to give a caution about two extremes.
One extreme is that there is no spiritual warfare going on.
We all know that one person
The other extreme is that everything is spiritual warfare. I mean you could not get the parking spot you wanted and you think it was a satanic attack. Or your favorite flavor of ice cream is gone and you think it is a satanic attack.
1. This story reminds us that Satan wants to keep us from God’s original design (1-5).
We must allow Jesus to defeat the evil in every area of our life because Satan wants to keep us from God’s original design.
Explanation:
v. 1-We see Jesus going into a gentile area and this is a reminder that God desires for his gospel to go to all the nations.
How did sin cause God’s design go bad?
God’s original design was to be in fellowship with him and with others. When Adam ate the apple we see that the original design began to go bad. As a result, we have inherited Adam’s guilt and fallen condition.
a. (v.2) Unclean-Tombs-We are unclean because of sin. Gospel how in God’s sight we are all unclean and no one is good. God can take dirt and make it clean. one drop of poison in a cup you would not drink it.
b. (v. 3-4) Uncontrollable-“no one was able to bind him anymore. Sin becomes uncontrollable in our life. This man became an animal.
Peter Schierman Story how it started small and then became out of control
We see this all the time with sin we see someone do a big sin and we are like how did that happen. A man does not cheat on his wife because of one decision. He usually starts looking at things he should not, and then he begins an inappropriate relationship and all the sudden he is in an affair.
Paul says it like this from Romans 7: 19-For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20-But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.
What I have experienced in my life as a Christian is that the closer I have gotten to God the more I have seen sin in my life. Cussing was a pretty easy sin to defeat.
As a Chrisitan we can actally struggle with sin more than an unbeliever
David committing adultery and murder
c. Isolated-He was in the tombs. That is not where you develop relationships. God’s entire purpose for creating us was so we could be in relationship and this man was not connected at all to other people. Authentic relationships. About six years ago I went through a big hurt in my life and I withdrew from authentic relationships with others. When people asked me how I was doing I did not want to say life sucks right now, so I would do the southern thing, it is great.
d. (v.5) Enslaved-We see that he was enslaved to sin. We are all enslaved to something (toothbrush illustration). Sin will hurt us and hurt others always. I am like every other parent out there, I think my kids are the greatest. I tell people they have my looks and my sin nature. But have you ever noticed with kids you don’t have to tell them how to sin you have to teach them to do right.
God wants us to live in victory
Application:
Do you look at this story and say wow I am not as bad as this guy? Or do you look at it and say sin has had an impact on my life and there is nothing I can do in power to get away from it. See before Jesus can heal us we have to realize that we have a serious sin problem and the original design has gone wrong.
Which of these symptoms is greatest in your life right now?
2. This story reminds us that we cannot defeat Satan on our own (6-13).
We must allow Jesus to defeat the evil in every area of our life because we cannot defeat Satan on our own.
Two questions we need to address we need to address here:
Are demons still around today-Share story about my Brian Matchell and how he saw a demon. Can a believer be filled with a demon today? No, when you believe in the Jesus the Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit comes into your life and fills you.
Here we see that this man comes to Jesus.
When Jesus comes he deals with evil head on: Jesus and evil cannot coexist
This man was so messed up that he had no other hope. We have to realized that we are in the same predicament. This man knew that he was hopeless and helpless about his situation. Without Jesus Christ, he knew he needed rescue.
It wasn’t until I realized that no matter how well I performed I was away from God’s original design, sin was so strong in my life, no matter how many good deeds I did or how many church services I attended there was nothing I could do about evil. I was in the same boat as this man who was living in a tomb.
Explanation:
How does Jesus respond to these evil demons?
Every time Jesus faces Satan he knocks him out. He defeated him for forty days and forty nights, he defeated at the cross, he will defeat him in the future at the great white throne judgment and today in this story he will defeat him.
Before I answer this question I want to point out the huge difference between Jesus and Satan: the demons wanted to control the humans they inhabited-this is also what sin does. It wants to enslave us. Jesus wants us to be free. Only true freedom can be found in the Lord Jesus Christ.
How does Jesus respond to these evil demons?
a. Commands the demons to come out of the man (Imperative). (8). If you will come to Jesus, he can take care of the sin and evil problem that we all have. Christianity is not about making bad people good it is about making dead people come to life. ***
b. Recognizes it’s power-Legions- “the term had impressed itself upon the Jewish mind as signifying vast numbers, complex organizations, invincible strength, and relentless oppression. He was the leader of a vast host of demons associated with him.” (9-13) He does not act like it is not there, he
c. He destroys Evil-Notice he gave the demons what they wanted. This was like the demon’s prayer and he said you want to go into the pigs. Jesus takes these demons serious because he knows that if he does not destroy them that they will destroy something else.
d. Pigs-Now we are in the south and we love our bacon now bacon is not the healthiest thing we can eat but it sure is good. Jews could not touch bacon and especially could not touch pigs.
Illustration:
Christianity versus other religions
Religions-If you do enough good, have a good enough philosophy you will earn favor with God
Christianity-Picture of a man drowning and saving us and then teaching us how to live.
Application
Most today would not be saying they are possessed by a demon however most of society and eve us
\are screaming at God, the Church and Christian values are screaming at God, “why are you interfering with my life? Get out.” When we reject Jesus Christ we put ourselves on the same side as the demons. Ultimately we follow Jesus or Satan there is no middle ground.
Here are some questions we must ask:
Will I choose self-autonomy and self-will that leads to destruction or will I chose Christ’s loving leadership over my life giving me: forgiveness, healing from sin, cleansing and true freedom?
Are you trying to live in victory without Jesus?
Maybe you have never trusted in Jesus Christ and you need to begin a relationship with him.
Maybe you are a believer but you are trying to grow in Christ in your own strength, you believe you are saved by grace but you are not living by grace daily.
3. This story reminds us that Satan desires us to stay in our comfort zone (14-17).
We must allow Jesus to defeat the evil in every area of our life because Satan to keep us in our comfort zones.
We as Americans love comfort: Lazy Boys.
Study By sociologist who interviewed old people about their biggest regrets:
Inteviewed 50 people over the age of 95 if you had to do life differently what would you do:
Reflect More
Risk More
Do more things that will live on after the grave
We see two different responses to Jesus in this passage. What is amazing about Jesus is that you cannot stay neutral with him. Ultimately there is no middle ground. You either choose Jesus or you reject him. It is ironic in this story that the person who you think would reject Jesus accepts him and the one you think would accept him does not.
Why did these men want Jesus to leave?
a. They preferred comfort over the God of the universe. They were afraid of his supernatural power in their life. Many times, we hear the gospel and we hear accept Jesus and he will make your life great. And this is true because the gospel tells us God will forgive us and give eternal life now and forever. A relationship with Jesus. But what we don’t know many times when we accept Jesus is that following Jesus is harder than not following Jesus.
Illustration-The Israelites illustrate this good in Exodus they tell Moses; Moses speak to us but don’t let God because we will die.
b. They did not want their lives to change.
Change is hard. It is hard to change our habits even our bad habits. It is hard to change our diets, routines, jobs. Change is hard even true change. This has been true in my life. I guarantee my life would be a lot easier without following Christ, I could live only for myself and I would not have to ask forgiveness when I mess up with my friends and family. It would be nice to say what these guys say to Jesus: Just leave me alone.
c. They loved money more than God
I had a family member who I never met and the doctor said you need to stop drinking and stop smoking. He looked at the Dr and said I will stop drinking but don’t ever ask me to give up my cigarettes again. Not all change is good but even good change is hard.
Application for point 3:
In order to get out of our comfort zone we have to realize who we are in Jesus. What happens when we trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Sat-He went from an out of control man to having peace. When we know who we are in Christ we will have peace.
Applications

DESCRIPTIONS:
Description of this man: Under the power of an unclean spirit, continually lived amen the tombs, no one could subdue him anymore, bound often with [with shackles and handcuffs: which he could tear apart], no one could restrain him, always shrieking and screaming and beating and bruising and cutting himself with stones [he was hurting himself], he fell before Jesus and cried out to Jesus, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?", He asked Jesus not to torment him anymore, he had been demon possessed, AFTER ENCOUNTER WITH JESUS: clothed in his right mind, he wanted to be with Jesus, he departed and began to publicly proclaim in Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him.
Jesus commands the demons and unclean spirit to come out of the man, Jesus gave the demons permission to go into the pigs (13), the demons were drowned because of the permission Jesus gave (13), legion possessed the man (15), People saw the man possessed by demons (16), Jesus refused to permit him to come with him contrasted to what Jesus told him what he wanted him to do-Go to your own family and tell them what the Lord has done for you, (20) Jesus was preached and as a result people were astonished and marveled.
Possible applications:
What the disciples can learn from this:

The soul of one man is worth more than a herd of pigs
People will not understand and will want you out
Every person is sinful apart from accepting Jesus
Jesus is either rejected or accepted
Jesus is accepted in this story by the least likely candidate
God may answer our prayers differently than we want to do
Were the people afraid of being judged is that why they were in fear?
The economic loss kept them away from seeing the spiritual gain that
Why we should “GO” and live for God
“If there existed only one man or woman who did not love the Savior, and if that person lived among the wilds of Siberia, and if it were necessary that all the millions of believers on the face of the earth should journey there, and every one of them plead with him to come to Jesus before he could be converted, it would be well worth all the zeal, labor, and expense. If we had to preach to thousands year after year, and never rescued but one soul, that one soul would be full reward for all our labor, for a soul is of countless price.” CHARLES HADDON SPURGEON
