1 John 5:4 (NKJV) 4  For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith.
1. That Christ is righteous.
2. That every born-again person is righteous.
3. That doing righteousness is proof of the new birth ( 1Jn. 3:6-10; 5:1-4,18).
overcometh the world
1. Power to do righteousness ( 1Jn. 2:29)
That Christ is righteous.
That every born-again person is righteous.
That doing righteousness is proof of the new birth ( 1Jn. 3:6-10; 5:1-4,18).
2. Actual sonship ( 1Jn. 3:1–3)
1 John 3:1-3 (NKJV) 1  Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2  Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3  And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
a [Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us] Look upon it and wonder at the kind and quanity of love the Father has given freely and without merit to men ( Eph. 3:17-19; Rom. 8:35-39 ).
b [sons of God] Sons by adoption ( Rom. 8:15; Gal. 4:5; Eph. 1:5), not by begetting as in the case of Christ, who is the only begotten Son of God (Jn. 1:14,18; 3:16,18).
c [world knoweth us not, because it knew him not] The world will not acknowledge or approve of doctrines and manner of life of the adopted sons, because it did not approve of Christ, the only begotten Son.
3. Freedom from sin ( 1Jn. 2:9; 5:18)
1 John 2:9 (NKJV) 9  He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.
1 John 5:18 (NKJV) 18  We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.
4. Love for the brethren ( 1Jn. 4:7–8; 3:14–18; 5:1)

7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love

The New King James Version (Chapter 3)
14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.

5. Love for God ( 1Jn. 4:19; 5:1–3)

19 We love Him because He first loved us.

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

6. Power to keep the New Testament commandments ( 1Jn. 5:2–3; Jn. 1:12; 14:15; 15:14)

2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.

You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.

7. Power to overcome the world ( 1Jn. 5:4–5)

4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

8. Freedom from Satan 1Jn. 5:18)

18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps 7himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.
