This text is commonly and traditionally known as the Beatitudes. In the Beatitudes, Jesus sets for the characteristics of the ideal subjects of his kingdom- qualities that were present in the life and character of the One who announced them. In the sermon on the Mount Jesus talks primarily to his Disciples. This is seen in verse 1, when the text states “His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.” This message was for the Disciples of Jesus Christ. May I submit to you that you may be saved, but that should not make you unteachable. It don’t matter how long you have been in church, the moment that you feel as if you cannot be taught anything else, you are in big trouble. 1 Corinthians 8:1b AMP states, “Knowledge [alone] makes [people self-righteously] arrogant. My prayer is that the Lord will keep us teachable all the days of our lives.
Jesus beings a standard that was revolutionary. The whole sermon is revolutionary, but nowhere more than in the first 12 verses. In these 12 verses he cuts clean across the idea of the definition of blessedness and happiness
