“Prayer and Expectations”

Welcome
recap last week
talk about this weeks message and prayer
PRAYER IS IMPORTANT
Enoch walked with God.
Abraham was a man of prayer.
Elijah prayed and the fire fell. He prayed again and God sent rain.
Moses prayed for forty days, and God gave him the Ten Commandments.
Jesus spent whole nights in prayer.
IN FACT He prayed, “Not my will, but you will be done.” = a beautiful example
The Bible tells us to pray at all times 1 Thessalonians 5:17 “pray without ceasing,”
As the air is to the body, so prayer is to the soul.
God answers prayer in three ways: (1) Yes, (2) No, (3) Wait
todays message is one we have talked on before so today I want us to open our minds and possibly see something new in it
lets stand and read todays passage
Luke 11:1–13 ESV
Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.” And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Im going to talk about the three P’s my three points
The pattern of Prayer
The Parable of Prayer
The Promises of Prayer
lets begin to break this down this morning

Point 1 The Pattern of Prayer

Luke 11:1 ESV
Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”
1. Request—v. 1. The disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray.
964The more we pray, the more we shall want to pray. The more we pray, the more we can pray. The more we pray, the more we shall pray. He who prays little will pray less, but he who prays much will pray more. And he who prays more, will desire to pray more abundantly.—18.288
Charles Spurgeon
Jesus’ response = You learn how to pray by praying.
2. Rule of praying—vv. 2–4 = Jesus gives us a template…
Luke 11:2–4 ESV
And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”
a) The Father—“Our Father which art in heaven.”
b) The name—“Hallowed [holy] be Thy name.”
we are in Luke so lets look at the greek translation of Hallowed = ἁγιάζω (Hagiazo) which means to sanctify to make holy…
preach on this…
To pray effectively we must want what God wants—that and that only is to pray in the will of God.
A. W. Tozer
c) The will—“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done.”
d) The provision—“Give us this day our daily bread.” = This means daily food, strength, and other provisions.
e) The forgiveness—“Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.” Only as we forgive can we be forgiven.
As God’s people need daily provision, they also need daily forgiveness.
When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he made forgiveness the cornerstone of their relationship with God.
God has forgiven believers’ sins; they must now forgive those who have wronged them. To remain unforgiving shows that the person has not understood that he or she deeply needs to be forgiven.
The meaning of this sentence focuses on the true repentance of a believer who understands the greatness of the forgiveness that he or she has received.
This believer willingly extends such forgiveness to others for their wrongs.
To refuse to forgive others can impede the forgiveness needed daily from God
f) The plea—“Lead us not into temptation.”
II. THE PARABLE OF PRAYER—vv. 5–8
Luke 11:5–6 ESV
And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’;
do you have needs? do you know someone who has a need?
1. The problem—vv. 5–6. There was a need for bread. Do you have needs? God will meet them
Philippians 4:19 ESV
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Luke 11:7 ESV
and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’?
2. The people—v. 7. Not willing to help. There are some who are so busy that they have no time to help others.
Luke 11:8 ESV
I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs.
3. The persistence—v. 8. Because of the man’s importunity (not willing to give up), the man would arise and give the bread that was needed.
a) Daily prayer
James 5:16 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
Make it a daily habit to pray.
b) Divine provision
John 15:7 “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” Abiding in Christ.
III. THE PROMISES OF PRAYER—vv. 9–13
Luke 11:9 ESV
And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
1. Simple promise—v. 9. Note: Ask, seek, knock. Praying need not be complicated. Even children can pray acceptably. Prayer does not depend on the language we use but on the attitude of our heart.
Luke 11:10 ESV
For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
2. Sure promise—v. 10. Those who ask receive; those who seek find; and those who knock have the door opened. God will answer you when you pray.
REMEMBER THOUGH, HIS ANSWER COMES IN ONE OF THREE WAYS 1. YES 2. NO 3. WAIT…
Luke 11:11–12 ESV
What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
3. Sincere promise—vv. 11–12. When the son asks for bread, does the father give him a stone? When he asks for an egg, does the father give a scorpion? If he asks for a fish, does he receive a serpent? God gives us what we ask for!
Luke 11:13 ESV
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
4. Steadfast promise—v. 13. If earthly fathers give good gifts to their children, then how much more shall God give good gifts to His children!
When you pray, don’t give up! God will answer. His promises are true. God keeps His Word … He cannot lie
Numbers 23:19 “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?”
Call upon Him, and He will answer you
Jeremiah 33:3 “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”
For every promise in God’s Word, we have a condition to meet. For example, before a person can be saved, he must confess his sin 1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Make it a habit to pray. Prayer changes things, people, and situations.
One might pray and not be a Christian, but one cannot be a Christian and not pray.
