Jesus and the Disciples John 12:20-26

The Request 12:20-22

John 12:20–22 NKJV
Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast. Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
Philip and Andrew tell Jesus that some Greeks desire to see Him.
Most likely Gentile proselytes to Judaism who had come up for the Passover and who, in their desire to see Jesus, stood in direct contrast to the attitude of the national leaders who desired to kill Him
At the moment the Jewish authorities were plotting to arrest and kill Jesus, the Gentiles were seeking His attention.
Jesus is Messiah for all people, not just the Jews
This request, led to a response from Jesus regarding the road that lay before Him.

The Response 12:23-26

John 12:23–26 NKJV
But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
The Hour:
Our Savior speaks of His impending death, resurrection and exaltation.
Until now, His hour had always been in the future, but as He entered Jerusalem, He walked closer to that goal.
Now the hour was at hand.
In Spring, many of us try our hand at growing food.
Seeds get planted into the soil
They “die” in hopes of springing forth in new life which in turn produce many more seeds in a bountiful harvest.
Jesus used that illustration to teach of what He was to do.
His death would result in the salvation of multitudes!
V 25-26 This applies to Jesus’ disciples as well
Love life- loose it
Hates life - gain everlasting life
Jesus is speaking about our worldview
secular- love THIS life
Focused on the here and now
Focused on sensual desires
live for what life under the sun can provide
Spiritual
give up our claim on THIS life for life eternal
Give ourselves to Jesus!
Be a true disciple focused on the finish line when we kneel before the Master!
Which do you love more?
This world and what it offers?
Eternal life?

Jesus and the Father John 12:27-29

The Request

John 12:27–28 NKJV
“Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
Jesus asks thee Father to “glorify Your name”
The tone here sound like an equivalent to Gethsemane, but here it is in public, not the privacy of the Garden.
He knew He was to be crucified and must have wrestled with the thoughts and feelings surrounding it on seveeral occasions.
Troubled- literally a strong horror, anxiety, and agitation
It is the keep you awake at night burden
Jesus, as God, knew exactly what was going to happen
Jesus, as a man, was troubled to face it. (Human emotion)
Jesus’ contemplation of taking on the wrath of God for thee sins of the world caused revulsion in the sinless Savior.
2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Glorify Your Name
This request was the principle that Jesus lived and died by. We should do the same.
All we do should be for the glory of God

The Response

John 12:28–29 NKJV
Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.” Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
The Father reassures the Son with a loud voice from heaven that is heard by the crowd that this indeed will be done.
The Father answered audibly!
This is one of 3 times during His ministry that the Father answered audibly
baptism Mt 3:17
Matthew 3:17 NKJV
And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
His transfiguarion
Matthew 17:5 NKJV
While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”
Our aim should always be to glorify God.
No one can honor the Father who does not also honor His Son (John 5:23), and the Son humbly honored and valued people with grace and kindness. To glorify God is to mirror His image, which is to love, and to love generously, as He does.
No one can glorify God as perfectly as Christ did, which is why we are in need of His mercy, but to believe in Jesus is to believe not only what He did for us but in the wisdom of the life that He modeled for us.
We honor Him through imitation of:
His obedience
Philippians 2:7–8 NKJV
but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
His message
Matthew 6:33 NKJV
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
His life of prayer
Luke 11:1 NKJV
Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”
Only 1 asked to be taught to pray
They had seen Him pray often
Jesus gave the model prayer
Matthew 6:9–13 NKJV
In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
His love for others
Matthew 22:36–40 NKJV
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
Jesus loved unconditionally
He loved all
The Samaritan woman
The Jewish disciples
Even us
He loves because God IS love!
Jesus loved us sacrificially
He put our need ahead of His own interests!
We should do the same for each other
family, church, community
In honoring the Son, we also honor the Father who so generously gave Him for us.
John 12:29 NKJV
Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”

Jesus and the Passover Crowd John 12:30–50

The First Session

1) Jesus tells them both the world and Satan would soon be judged John 12:30-31
John 12:30–31 NKJV
Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
Ruler of this world
Satan
The cross appeared to be Satan’s victory over God, but was really Satan’s defeat
Romans 16:20 NKJV
And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
2) He will save men by way of the cross
John 12:32–34 NKJV
And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” This He said, signifying by what death He would die. The people answered Him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”
Lifted up- the cross
Draw all to Him- the pull of the Gospel
The Law-
They focused on verses about the everlasting Kingdom
Their tradition would not let them accept the suffering Servant first.
3) They need to accept Him before it is too latee
John 12:35–36 NKJV
Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.
Jesus gave a final invitation to them
He calls men to repentance
Sadly, they rejected Him as many today still do

The Second Session

The prophesy
John 12:37–41 NKJV
But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, Lest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.” These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.
The crowd’s unbelief was predicted centuries before by Isaiah
Isaiah 53:1 NKJV
Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
Isaiah 6:10 NKJV
“Make the heart of this people dull, And their ears heavy, And shut their eyes; Lest they see with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And return and be healed.”
2) The praise seeker
John 12:42–43 NKJV
Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
Some Jewish leaders believe Jesus is the Messiah but will not confess him, for they love men’s praise more than God’s praise.
3) The promise
John 12:44–50 NKJV
Then Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me. And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.”
To accept Christ is to accept the Father which leads to everlasting life.
