When i was in my mid twenties I was involved in a car accident.
I hurt my back
I tried everything to fix the pain from it
Yoga, exercise, stretching, meditation, you name it
I would have to stretch for 20 minutes each morning just to be able to move with moderate pain!
I went to many doctors looking for help
The only thing they wanted to do was prescribe pain medicine
My condition didn't get any better, in fact it only grew worse.
I needed a miracle
Until i had a moment with God in prayer and I gave it up to him
(recall the story of feeling a hot touch in my back)
We’re gonna hear a story about two characters.
Who both needed a miracle in their life.
The first character is Jairus, a synagogue leader, a pastor if you will, and he needed Jesus to just come and heal his daughter.
The other character is a woman named... well, we don’t know her name.
She’s introduced to us by her condition. Her struggle defines her.
She’s called the woman with the issue of blood.
This story is a story of a miracle inside a miracle, if you will.
TURN IN YOUR BIBLES TO MARK 5:21-43 PAGE
LETS PRAY
Jairus comes to Jesus
Jairus was like a modern-day pastor. Well-known and important
Jairus throwing himself down before Jesus was an act of worship
Publicly proclaiming that Jesus was GOD
Jairus was a man of great knowledge in the things of God
Did you know that knowledge of God doesn't necessarily mean faith in God?
Jairus had great knowledge of God and the Torah and probably had most of the Torah memorized, yet we see here that he demanded Jesus come to heal his daughter.
If we contrast this with the story in Matthew 8 of the centurion who visited Jesus, we begin to see the differences in their faith and how Jesus uses both.
This centurion, an officer in the roman army, came to Jesus with very little or no knowledge of God.
He only knew what the rumors were about Jesus.
Yet he says to Jesus, “Lord, i do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word and my servant will be healed”
(Little Faith, Compared to Big Faith)
Jesus does a lot with a little
Mustard seed
The power is not in our Faith; it is in the one we put our Faith IN
JESUS CHRIST
Even though Jairus probably had a little faith, Jesus goes with Jairus and heads on his way to Jairus’ house.
On the way we are introduced to the THE WOMAN in our story
Now this poor woman had been struggling with her medical condition for 12 years
Just like me and my nac injury this woman had exausted all her options for healing
The Bible says that instead of getting better she grew worse…
SHE IS CALLED - “The woman with the Issue of blood”
I want to point out the fact that she isn’t introduced by her name; she is introduced by her difficulty
She struggled with this issue for so long that she became defined by her struggle
Her identity was wrapped up in this crisis
She was literally dying on the inside
Her issue isolated her.
This disease separated her from the very people that she loved
The Bible says in Leviticus that a woman with this condition would be considered ceremonially unclean
This condition affected every aspect of her life
She was cut off and isolated from the very people that she loved and the relationships she had
Not only did this isolate her from relationships, but the Bible says she had spent all that she had and was no better.
She was isolated financially and had given it everything she had with no success
In fact, the Bible says it only got worse
I’m sure this woman tried every option there was at the time. Doctors, sorcerers, potions, pills, and snakes.
NOTHING WAS WORKING
She only got worse
She was isolated from the community
She was isolated financially
Every day would have been a struggle for her.
In her isolation, the enemy probably came in and convinced her that she was the only one going through something like that
How many of us here today can relate to that?
Illustration:
Addiction - Personal struggle. It took everything from me.
Isolated, Alone, Weak
The opposite of addiction if comunity
The enemy wanted me cut off from help
Have you ever gone through something difficult?
Addiction, depression, anxiety, fear, trauma, pain, loss, incarceration?
When we go through something difficult, the enemy will come in and do whatever it takes to keep us isolated - to keep us cut off from community.
I’m here to tell you today that whatever you are going through, Whatever has you feeling cut off from the ones you love and isolated from your community of support, is not too big for Jesus
Maybe you can’t put down alcohol
Maybe you are struggling with depression,
Maybe it is trauma that you can’t seem to heal from
Maybe it’s pornography
Whatever it is
I’m here today to tell you that you're not the only one
You are not alone in this:
1 Corinthians 10:13
“There is no temptation that has overtaken you except what is common to mankind.”
We all struggle with the same things in different ways.
The Bible says this woman was bleeding profusely on the inside
And on the outside, it looked like everything was just fine.
To the crowd, she blended in
You couldn’t have picked her out if you wanted to
But she was dying on the inside.
And there may be some of you here today as you sit here and listen to this word
You look just fine on the outside
You look like everything is OK.
Like you don’t have a problem or a care in the world
But on the inside, you are dying.
Your faith is leaking
Your experiencing brokenness
Maybe your going through something extremely difficult
You're trying desperately to mask what you're going through
I know how it feels: For over a decade, I tried to hide what I was going through with addiction.
I tried to mask what I felt on the inside.
Well, I’m here today with GOOD NEWS for you
Whatever you're going through, whatever has you bleeding on the inside
You are not alone!
God sees you, and God knows your need
And just like this woman, Just like me and what I was going through
ONE TOUCH from JESUS will change everything in your life
ONE TOUCH from JESUS will set you free
Can you believe with me today that Jesus will deliver you?
That he will set us free.
God wants to heal you TODAY
God wants to restore you in Jesus Name.
According to Biblical law, this woman was deemed to be ceremonially unclean
The Bible says in Leviticus that anyone unclean with this issue had to be isolated.
Because anyone they touched, anyone they came in contact with, would also become unclean.
That means that anything she touched on her way to Jesus, would have become unclean as well
Let’s remember the crowd that she was pushing through in an attempt to get to Jesus
Anyone she came in contact with would become unclean
Every elbow she bumped, and shoulder she touched would be considered UNCLEAN
Why is this so important to understand?
Because this woman believed that her struggle only affected her.
That her issue only isolated her.
But the truth is that the things she was carrying and the struggle she was going through,
It affected everyone she came in contact with
You might be here today struggling with an addiction, Just like I did, and think it is only affecting you.
You might be thinking that your behavior is a burden that’s only weighing on you
Well, that’s a lie from the enemy
Your struggle, whatever it might be, is affecting everyone in your life you care about
Everyone you come in contact with
BUT There is good news
Jesus said in John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
And I’m telling you today that if you just put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ, he will free you from your burden.
He will free you from the handcuffs of addiction.
Whatever it is holding you down, I’m standing here before you today as living proof that one touch from Jesus and you will be free.
I bought the lie the enemy was telling me, and for many, many years, I believed my addiction, my sin, was only affecting me
That it was a burden I carried alone
Well, please don’t believe the lie the enemy is trying to tell you.
Your sin, your sickness, your guilt, your shame, your trauma, whatever it might be that is causing you to bleed on the inside, is affecting not just your life but the lives of everyone around you.
In my past, I ran to drugs to try and medicate my pain, to try and use what the world had to offer to…. heal me.
I am going to tell you something very important today,
The world will never be able to heal the pain you are going through.
There is a hole inside of you that can only be filled by God
Everything that you try and put in that hole will slip right out the bottom and leave you empty again
If you run to alcohol, drugs, and pornography, or if you go from relationship to relationship trying everything the world has to offer, you will only end up, like this woman, like me, worse off than before.
There is hope, and the great physician is just waiting to change everything
If you came here today with brokenness in your life, one touch from Jesus and everything will be made whole
The Bible says that in Jesus, all things are made new, and the former things have all passed away
Jesus sees you, knows you, and wants to heal whatever you are struggling with.
Mark 5:27 “When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd...”
This woman finally got herself into the right crowd.
She surrounded herself with people who were there to see Jesus
She reached out and touched him, and immediately, “She was made well.”
That is an excellent image of what it is like to come in contact with Jesus’
He wants to heal you from your sickness and forgive you of your sins.
Jesus says to this woman, “daughter, your faith has made you well, go in peace and be healed.”
The woman had faith and was healed.
That’s how it works for us.
IT SAYS THAT SHE RECEIVED HEALING INSTANTLY
We have to believe that he is who he says he is and that he can do what he says he will do
Now let's get back to our first character Jairus
In verse 35 and 36
While Jesus was still speaking, people came to them and told Jairus that his daughter was dead. And not to bother the teacher anymore.
They were basically telling Jesus that this was beyond repair
And Jesus responded to this and was like - nawwwwww watch this..
So Jesus tells Jairus not to have fear, but Just Believe.
Jesus knew that fear would try and rob Jairus of his faith.
Fear is a liar, and fear is from the enemy.
Don't let fear get between you and Jesus!
They get to Jairus’ house, and there is just a sea of people weeping and mourning outside the house
It was Jewish tradition that you would hire professional mourners.
They were grieving over the death of this young girl.
What does Jesus say?
In verse 39 and 40 Jesus says “The child is not dead but asleep.”
The crowd gathered at the house responded by laughing at Jesus.
The people that were at Jairus’ house tried to discourage Jairus’ faith.
Jairus was in the wrong crowd of people.
I cannot stress the importance of this enough
The people we surround ourselves with matter
They will either build our faith or laugh and tear us down
It says that Jesus, After removing the faithless mockers,
Takes Jairus, the mother, and the ones that were with JESUS and goes into where the girl lay.
Don’t miss the point here that Mark is trying to make, it is so crucial that we surround ourselves with the right people.
We saw it with the woman, she got into the right crowd following Jesus, and now we see it with Jairus.
Jesus says to the girl, “Talitha, Cumi,” which means, “Little girl, i say to you, arise.”
Immediately the girl rose, and everyone was overcome with great amazement.
These two people in our story were in the midst of a crisis
They exhausted every option before coming to the lord
If there is one thing we can learn from this is that we NEED JESUS
Nothing else will heal us and nothing else will save us.
The chapter ends with Jesus giving them strict instructions that no one should be told about this.
And what do they do? They go and tell everyone, I mean, books were written with this in there.
We see this time and time again in the Bible with Jesus, He tells people not to tell anyone, and they do it anyway.
In the great commission we are told to go into all the world and tell everyone.
Yet most of us have never told anyone the gospel message
Some of us have a hard time sharing our faith with the very people in our household.
What does that say about us?
We tend to do the opposite of what we are told.
It is ingrained in our human culture to go against what you are being told.
Well as Christians, Christ followers, we are called to be counter-culture
We are not supposed to go with the flow
We are not supposed to blend into the crowd
We are called to a higher purpose
So i leave you with this;
Share your testimony with someone this week
Share what God has done in your life
Share the good news
Remember, if you tell no one, the GOOD NEWS, just becomes a good secret.
Lets pray
