Letting Go of Our Pride
And Rely On God
Today we are calling this sermon “Can Jesus Liberate Us?”
Story
The time Karen and I went off roading and got stuck
a Jeep had to liberate us
Today we are going to look at a man that Jesus liberated from a demon.
Pray
And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”
Let Look at verse 23 for a moment what is spoken?
Immediately
Immediately
The greek word here is (U-thoo-s) it tells us that right when Jesus was done talking the demon began speaking in a more sudden matter.
lets think about this for a minute
Jesus finished talking then the demon spoke
The demon had to wait for Jesus to finish
had to wait until the Word was finished speaking
what can we gleam from this
It is not just demons that wait for the Word to stop speaking to you,
it is our flesh as well
You are in a church service and hear the Word, and make a decision to make a life change/
and leave and it goes out the window because someone said something you didn’t like
You are reading your Bible and realize that you have been in sin and there is forgiveness/
than you close the Bible and soon after the temptation comes and you fail
Your are praying and feel the Holy Spirit moving and you just want to stay in that place with God/
then someone at work makes you mad and you start gossiping about them and its gone
While Jesus was speaking the demon was silent
but when the demon started speaking What did Jesus Do?
But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.
The greek word here for be silent is (Fe-mo) it means PUT to Silence
When the demon came and opened it’s mouth Jesus said to it shut up and and come out.
AND it came out.
it came out because there is power in Christ
so much power that even the demon has to obey Him
Jesus Can Liberate Us From Our Afflictions
Jesus Can Liberate Us From Our Afflictions
If The Christ’s Words can drive out demons, heavenly beings, how much more power He has over our affiliations, and our flesh
SO When you hear the Word of God at a Church service or Bible study instead of letting someone get to you and change your commitment
Rebuke it, “In Jesus name, get out of my life unrighteous anger
CALL IT BY NAME
When You are reading your Bible and realize that you have been in sin and there is forgiveness than you close the Bible and soon after the temptation comes and you fail
Rebuke it, “In Jesus name, get out of my life temptation” I have been set free through the blood of Christ, and temptation you have no power over me because of He who live in me.
Your are praying and feel the Holy Spirit moving and you just want to stay in that place with God then someone at work makes you mad and you start gossiping about them and its gone
Rebuke it, “In Jesus name, get out of my life gossip, I am a new creation
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Gossip and slander have no place in my life because of HE who saved me.
what is interesting to me is if we are praying how much harder it is for us to fall to the attacks of the enemy and the flesh and maybe that is why we are told to pray without ceasing
pray without ceasing,
Because if we are praying,
the power of the enemy and the flesh loses their influence on us, because we are in communion with the one who
spoke to the darkness and chaos and said let there be light
The one who breathed life into mankind
the one who even know the number of hairs on your head
so no matter what affliction you are going through, YES Jesus can liberate you from that.
You know today I want to ask a question
Do you know Jesus?
I don’t mean like do you know the name
I don’t mean, do you come to Church?
I don’t even mean do you read your Bible or pray
and even did you pray a prayer once
I mean DO YOU KNOW HIM?
Do you have a relationship with Him?
If the answer is no, or I’m not sure it’s time to change that
years ago I was asked to go with a pastor to do a baptism of a shut in. The person said to us, I almost missed heaven by 18”.
that stuck with me.
we might think everything is great because
We go to Church
we picked up a Bible
we say a prayer
or maybe you have never gave your life to Him at all
today I want to ask you during this song to take a moment before communion and ask the question “Do I really know and have a Relationship with Christ?
if not it’s time to change that,
today we are going to say the prayer together
