Song of Solomon 2v16-17

He Is Mine, I Am His

Introduction

Come to a truth that is fundamental to our understanding of this of book, of marriage and our relationship with Jesus Christ.

Song of Solomon 6:3

3 I am my lover’s and my lover is mine;

he browses among the lilies.

1.      Certainty v16-17

2.      Commitment

a.      One Flesh

Genesis 2:24

24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

b.      Belonging

1 Corinthians 7:3-5

3 The husband should fulfil his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.4 The wife’s body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband’s body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife.5 Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

c.      Loving Submission

Ephesians 5:22-23

22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Saviour.

3.      Conviction

a.      God’s People

NIV: Le 26:12

 12 I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people.

NIV: Ru 1:16

16 But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.

NIV: Je 31:33

33 “This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel

after that time,” declares the Lord.

“I will put my law in their minds

and write it on their hearts.

I will be their God,

and they will be my people.

NIV: Eze 14:11

 11 Then the people of Israel will no longer stray from me, nor will they defile themselves any more with all their sins. They will be my people, and I will be their God, declares the Sovereign Lord.’ ”

NIV: Ho 2:23

23 I will plant her for myself in the land;

I will show my love to the one I called ‘Not my loved one’.

I will say to those called ‘Not my people’, ‘You are my people’;

and they will say, ‘You are my God.’ ”

NIV: Ro 9:25

 25 As he says in Hosea:

“I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people;

and I will call her ‘my loved one’ who is not my loved one,”

NIV: 2 Co 6:16

 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

NIV: Heb 8:10

10 This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel

after that time, declares the Lord.

I will put my laws in their minds

and write them on their hearts.

I will be their God,

and they will be my people.

NIV: Re 18:4

4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say:

“Come out of her, my people,

so that you will not share in her sins,

so that you will not receive any of her plagues;

b.      God’s Possession

NIV: Is 43:1

Israel’s Only Saviour

43 But now, this is what the Lord says—

he who created you, O Jacob,

he who formed you, O Israel:

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;

I have summoned you by name; you are mine.

NIV: Mal 3:17

17 “They will be mine,” says the Lord Almighty, “in the day when I make up my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him.

c.      United With Christ

Romans 6:5

5 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.

Conclusion

We truly belong to Christ.
