Have you noticed, when people meet, how they introduce themselves?
I am a son/daughter of …
I am a husband/wife of …
I am a doctor, farmer, home maker, etc.
We identify ourselves either by who we’re related to OR by what we do.
However, there is one who does not need to identify Himself by someone or something else.
And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
Do you remember when Dr. Fauci announced “I am the science.”
Some people followed him, while others saw the arrogance in that statement.
Because Dr. Fauci was most definitely NOT the science.
But when God says “I AM WHO I AM”,
That is not arrogance.
Not because He’s God and can do whatever He wants,
But because He is not created.
He is the cause of all creation,
The root of all history.
God said to Moses:
“I AM has sent me to you.”
Think of how often God has said “I am the Lord…”, “I am the God of…”
This is different.
When you or I use the phrase “I am…”, we are identifying ourselves in reference to something or someone else.
When God says “I am the Lord”, or “I am the God of”, He is also identifying Himself in relation to others.
But when God tells Moses “I AM WHO I AM!”,
He is identifying Himself as only being who was not created, begotten, or derived from someone else.
He is NOT someone’s son, as Jesus is.
He cannot be explained by something else.
Everything else is explained by Him.
Jesus used the phrase “I AM” as well.
When asked:
Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”
What was Jesus’ response?
Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
This obviously speaks to His eternal nature,
But it also speaks to Jesus as the Son of God.
“I AM” as the name of God is so important, so powerful, the it drives people to their knees.
Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?” They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
