Luke 4:1-13

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness

4:1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted[a] by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[b]”

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.

And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.

If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[c]”

The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here.

10 For it is written:“‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;

11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[d]”

12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[e]”

13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

Probation

This is the first of a 7 part sermon series titled “Live Differently”

So today we are going to discuss Probation. Now when we hear the word probation we think of someone who is in trouble with the law. Well the definition in the dictionary is subjected to a period of good behavior. So today we are going to talk about when Jesus was tested in a time of probation in the wilderness, this tested his fortitude of his faith. I would like to break down our scripture this morning and see how we can live our life as Jesus today. In our Scripture today we start by learning about Jesus going to the desert and spending 40 days being tested by the devil. I would imagine the worst of this trial was he did not eat. Can you imagine the hunger he was under? If I go with out eating for about 4 hours I get hangry. So let’s understand the more his hunger grew, as humans we would get less patient. This is another testimony to how patient Jesus is. You see When we think of the Holy Spirit taking us somewhere we always think of still waters, Just as Jesus he leads us into tough times of testing, to help us in the long run be able to to handle things to come. When we face these kind of trials we should look at ourselves first and see did we sin or cause this situation to happen, Then we need to turn to God and ask him to strengthen us through this test. We need to understand we need to follow faithfully no matter where the Holy Spirit leads us. Let’s look at when the devil says to Jesus “If you are the God’s son tell this stone turn into bread”. would that not have been an easy fix to his situation? But the easy way out? but this is not the path Jesus was ask to follow. Jesus responded in a way we all should respond to this fallen angel. Which since the start of time has used everything available to cause us to stumble and follow him instead of God. You see since the devil succeeded tricking Adam and Eve he figured he could trick Jesus. But Jesus again shows us what true faith looks like. Although the devil was not through testing Jesus he then took him to a high place and and showed him all the nations. Then told Jesus “I will give all this power and glory to you. Stating he was given all this and he could give it to anyone he wanted. The only thing Jesus had to do is worship satin. but Jesus replied “Worship the Lord your God and serve him only”. How many thing in our life do we allow the devil tempt us with? The worst being money. This alone causes us to sin more than most things in life. We as humans will beg barrow and steal for this because it gives us false power. When true power comes through Jesus Christ. Then the devil took Jesus to Jerusalem atop the temple. He told Jesus if your God’s son jump, because the scripture says “God will tell the angels to take care of you they will catch you in their arms, and you will not even hurt your feet on the stones.” but Jesus him by saying “The scripture also says, “Don’t try to test the lord your God.” You see we are never to try to test God in anyway, We as humans have a tendency to say God if you do this then Ill know this is from you. Or we figure we can make bad choices because God tells us he will be with us and protect us. But we forget we responsible with the free choice of our decisions. Jesus is not a game we mess with and test and see if its real, faith is something we are to have completely. We are to trust God with our life wholly believe in his love for us and not question where he takes us. If we remember our requirements to follow Jesus, we have to let our old life die and be born a new in him. That means completely knowing he will allow all things we go through to be used for the good of his kingdom. So as we Give our life to Jesus christ e need to remember we are begin the Lenten season in a period of probation a season of good deeds.
