We last looked at the true events of Noah and how God destroyed the ground and everything on it because of their wickedness and because of the mixing between angels and people. We also saw that God promised to never curse the ground because of mans sin again. God showed us how the heart of people is only wicked even from a baby and how we desperately need God, not only for salvation but also for the strength to live for God and do good.
Today we are going to look at the full Noahic covenant, or the agreements God made with Noah. First thing I want to point out is that this agreement was one sided, sometimes God makes agreements with people in the bible that are two sided, if you do x then I will do y. This agreement is not one of those. this is God saying I am making you a promise and in this promise we will see God actually say this promise will last forever.
Genesis 9:1–3 KJV 1900
1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. 2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. 3 Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
God instructs Noah and his family to begin repopulating the earth. but the earth is going to be different than it was before the flood. to us this does not seem like a big deal but to Noah, this was something new.
God says every beast of the earth and every bird and every creature of the sea will be filled with fear of people. have you ever noticed, that for the most part, if you approach a wild animal if you get to close they run away? sometimes, if one gets very used to people, on a farm or game reserve, they may be less afraid, but that is not the usual case. Before the flood of Noah that was not the case.
God also told Noah that it is now granted for people to kill and eat any animals that are on the earth. before the flood this was not permitted by God. We are not sure if people did it, but we do know that God had not specifically given permission until now, some 1,600 years after creation.
Genesis 9:4 KJV 1900
4 But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
There is one stipulation God puts on this allowance, we should not eat its blood, the meat must have the blood cooked out of it. Todays science tells us it is only safe medically if we cook the blood out of the meat, because blood contains all sorts of diseases and bacteria. God put this rule as a protection to keep the people safe.
Genesis 9:5 KJV 1900
5 And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.
Reckoning = Accounting. God will keep track of the people He created and anytime an animal or person spills a persons blood, God will hold them accountable. God promises that even the animals will be punished if they kill a person and the same goes for people. If a person kills another person, God will make sure they are held accountable.
Genesis 9:6 (KJV 1900)
6 Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
God tells us as a group of people, to hold accountable those people that are known to murder someone. If we can kill animals and eat them, why not do it to people? Because God made man above all the animals, We are made in the image of God, meaning we are made of a spirit just like God is spirit, animals do not have a soul, we do.
Genesis 9:11 KJV 1900
11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
Coming down from verse 7 to verse 11 God tells Noah gain that He is making an agreement. God says He will never again destroy all people and creatures, using a flood.
Genesis 9:12–13 KJV 1900
12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
Genesis 9:17 (KJV 1900)
17 And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.
Token = pledge you can see, as a reminder. Like a written and signed contract.
God’s symbol as a reminder to us, to God and to all the earth, is the rainbow we see every time it rains. I would imagine, after being on the ark when a rainstorm came, fear may have came across everyone, like, Oh no, not again! God told Noah all you have to do is look up, see the rainbow and remember no matter how hard the rain is, it will not destroy the world, it will end and the sun will come back out. The rainbow is a symbol of peace and comfort from God, that he is watching over us and the current storm will not destroy us!
Today people and satan himself want to steal God’s symbol of peace, love and comfort and use if for Pride and rebellion against God.
Proverbs 16:18 (MEV)
18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
God say’s that attitude, of rebellion against the way God created people (one man, one woman marriage) will lead these people to destruction. God is not going to destroy the earth again with a flood but those who steal God’s promise and twist it full of pride will end up finding nothing but destruction.
Of all we read today,
1. We can see God’s grace in allowing us to live on and multiply in spite of who we are.
2. We can see God’s protection over us even getting revenge from any animals that may harm us.
3. We can see God places mankind at a much higher place of importance than animals and we are to have control over them and using them for food, clothing and working.
We can see God’s desire to give us comfort by providing the rainbow as a reminder of his promise to never flood the earth again.
