Gen 2:4-6
English Standard Version Chapter 2
4 These are the generations
of the heavens and the earth when they were created,
in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.
5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— 7
Good morning!--like I said my name is Grant–
Welcome!
If your new– you picked a great day to join– because as I mentioned earlier— 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY AS A CHURCH!!
And as we've seen as much as this is 10 years of reflecting on God's faithfulness this is also a season of new beginnings for this church.
We have an origin story of this church plant and we're continuing with new beginnings..
So it only makes sense that God would have us reading HIS Origin story.
We're starting our new series today in the Book of Genesis.. The book of “origin”.
IT is the Origin Story or the Story of Beginnings.
This book marks the beginnings of Creation.
- Beginning of the universe
- Beginning of man
- Where sin came from
- How God responds to Sin
The Faithfulness of God through his Promises/Covenants
And this family Israel.
This book has a LOT to teach us..
In fact, Genesis gives us the basis for the rest of the Bible it is the foundation of biblical understanding this is where God has laid his foundation for all understanding of his word..
In fact John Calvin once said, “The whole system of theology, stands or falls according to how one interprets the first chapters of Genesis."
So the question is what is this book about?
We search this book for all sorts of answers to all sorts of questions..
What's up with the flood
Noah's Ark
Creation story
How old is the Earth?
What about the dinosaurs?
Did Adam and Eve have belly buttons?
We ask this book a whole bunch of questions..
But what if I told you that NONE of those questions are getting to the aim of this book?
See maybe you thought if I get an answer to this world to how it was created or where dinosaurs come from.. when I can wrap my head around creation THEN I'll be a Christian..
Let me tell you right now that that's not how it will work because Christianity isn't bore out of the creation story Christianity is bore out of the recreation story..It's bore out of relationship.
Which is why none of those questions answer the TRUE Questions that I think we’re really asking anyway..
See Moses wrote This Book right after God had saved Israel from slavery in Egypt. God parted the red sea and Israel has been saved from slavery to Egypt.
They’re in the desert they’re wondering what the heck is going on and so Moses is writing this book to answer these questions..
And I think the root of Israel’s questions is the same as ours.. God who are you? And Can I trust you?
Because God wrote this book so that we might Celebrate the Character of our Creator.
Turn with me to Genesis 1:1. First page in your Bible it’s the first book in the OT.
