Introduction
The last several weeks we have just skimmed what is rich instruction in Psalm 119 and I find it timely as a precursor to what we will ultimately discuss this week. Ultimately, we are continuing our study in the Psalms and looking at a Psalm of David in Psalm 5. But within this, I will address what became a hot topic this week. One that not only made seperation from believer and unbeliever, but also separation between believer and believer.
Now I preface this with saying, disagreement is ok. Disagreement happens. We are humans. When faulty humans think they have it all figured out there is always another who has figured it out………… more
So some of you may have seen my facebook post about the super bowl commercial. Some were confused because they certainly didnt see it and others did.
For copyright issues, I cannot play it on the stream, but I will describe the commercial in a fair and unbias way to just set the scene.
Young man washing older mans feet
Cop washing black mans feet in an alley
Cheerleader girl washing the odd girl
cowboy washing an indian
A PROTESTOR WASHING A YOUNG GIRL WHO IS GETTING AN ABORTION
…..…
A priest washing a gay mans feet
Then here are the phrases in big letters directly from the commercial
JESUS DIDNT TEACH HATE
JESUS WASHED FEET
HE GETS US ALL OF US
Now I am unaware that many people can and did interpret things how they want. We can guess alll day on what was intended. I feel certain I know what was intended but at the same time, how can I be certain? Im not them.
So Lets just take them at what they said
JESUS DIDNT TEACH HATE
JESUS WASHED FEET
HE GETS US ALL OF US
Keep that in mind, I will respond and expound on my post but lets first begin in Psalm 5
Psalm 5 (NASB95)
For the choir director; for flute accompaniment. A Psalm of David.
1 Give ear to my words, O Lord, Consider my groaning. 2 Heed the sound of my cry for help, my King and my God, For to You I pray. 3 In the morning, O Lord, You will hear my voice; In the morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch. 4 For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness; No evil dwells with You. 5 The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes; You hate all who do iniquity.
There’s that word Jesus didnt teach. Hate. There is that word that we tell our kids not to say. There is the word that has sparked such controversy.
David is crying out to God and in deep trouble. he is lamenting to the Lord. This Psalm was at some point when the enemies were numerous and he was surrounded.
There is not a single believer that if you havent lived long enough that you have not at some point felt as if all barrels were facing toward you. Either by enemies or some sort of persecution. You begin to cry out to God and say somehting along these lines
God why,
I have tithed
prayed
read the bible
done quiet time
ministered to others
sought after you
and this is what I get?
God sees you and he hears you in those times. God has not changed. You may not see it but eagerly watch for the Lord to do what He always does.
Watching movies with Cannon Emma and Tripp. So many times I have to say just wait, just wait, just wait
Sometime we are like that with God but listen to the Holy Spirit and believe God’s word when He says just wait.
4 For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness; No evil dwells with You. 5 The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes; You hate all who do iniquity. 6 You destroy those who speak falsehood; The Lord abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit.
Evil and God are exact opposites. People want you to believe that Jesus came to make a treaty with evil, or to play nce with evil. They will use the fact that Jesus was a friend to sinners and ate with tax collectors and prostitutes and other sinners and they will make it as if Jesus came to Get US
Jesus came to destroy sin shame and evil. Jesus wanted no part of it. He resisted it in the dessert, he condemned it in the pharisees and freed people from it and told them to go and sin no more. And gave instruction on staying away from it.
Evil and sin itself stands in opposition. If the commercial or any modern makes you feel in any way that Jesus is ok with my sin, then it has missed the point.
The sin that each person in those pictures represent, was there very reason Jesus died. THE SIN YOU AND I ARE GUILTY OF is the very reason Jesus had to die.
7 But as for me, by Your abundant lovingkindness I will enter Your house, At Your holy temple I will bow in reverence for You. 8 O Lord, lead me in Your righteousness because of my foes; Make Your way straight before me. 9 There is nothing reliable in what they say; Their inward part is destruction itself. Their throat is an open grave; They flatter with their tongue. 10 Hold them guilty, O God; By their own devices let them fall! In the multitude of their transgressions thrust them out, For they are rebellious against You.
Gods lovingkindness is the difference. God’s lovingkindness is the very thing that leads us FROM THE THINGS HE DOES HATE.
IF HE HATES WE SHOULD TOO
11 But let all who take refuge in You be glad, Let them ever sing for joy; And may You shelter them, That those who love Your name may exult in You. 12 For it is You who blesses the righteous man, O Lord, You surround him with favor as with a shield.
Those who take refuge, they will find it, those who dont will experience the wrath of God
