Exodus 15:22–27 RVR60
Exodus 15:22–27 NKJV
22 So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness of Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. 23 Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called Marah. 24 And the people complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” 25 So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them, 26 and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.” 27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there by the waters.
Israel has crossed the Red Sea, and they are happy, so they sing a song. But after that, they went out into the desert.
*Get them up and go to the other side of the room*
But there, they could not find water. They were thirsty for three days. What would you do if you couldn't drink water for three days? And if during that same time, you were walking all day?
‌But when they reached the waters, they were bitter. Imagine after so much time, that the only source of water tastes bad and can cause illness. If that was the only solution, would you take it? Would you rather be thirsty, or drink bitter water that could make you sick?
Because of that, the people were angry with Moses. They did not want to drink what was given to them. Which was not bad in itself, because it could cause illness. But the bad thing was that they became angry with Moses. We have to be grateful at all times, and not get angry with others.
Moses did good: He prayed to God, and God gave him an answer. When we pray, God hears us, and he can give us what we need. What Moses asked for here was something necessary, and God gives us everything he knows we need.
‌But God did not do every step for him: He wanted to give him responsibility to accomplish the work. He showed him a tree, and Moses had to throw it into the water. And we don't know how much the tree weighed, but it had to be at least a little difficult.
‌But when Moses obeyed God's command, the waters became sweet.
‌And after that, God gave them other commands. This teaches us that the work of a Christian never stops.
‌(Walk back to the other side)
‌And in the end, they arrived at a great place, which was full of fountains of sweet water, where they could rest.
‌This is how God acts, sometimes taking us through a difficult time so that we can trust in Him, and He gives us rest in Him.
