WISDOM CRIES ALOUD IN THE STREETS
As I come forward at end of worship
SLIDE 1 “WELCOME”
Reflections from worship
Last week the Lord taught us about “Humility - a forgotten virtue”
The Lord seems to be taking us through what we could call true Christian characteristics
Walking by the Spirit was powerful, having courageous faith was huge and what God’s word had shown us about humility was eye opening
Remember like the special covering of grace God gives to the humble.......but it seems every fault o r disobedience gets revealed in the prideful
Today The Lord wants to show us what He gives to those that humble themselves
SLIDE 2 “WISDOM CRIES ALOUD IN THE STREETS”
So last week we saw God’s special covering.....over who? the humble........now today the special thing He gives to the humble ? wisdom
Yes our title of today’s message......man I’ve never heard of such statement...... and what does that even mean
Well first of all that statement a line of out of the word of God found.......you guessed it...... in the book of Proverbs
Before looking at that lets tie in what God’s word from last week what the humble get from the Lord
SLIDE 3
2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with the humble is wisdom.
That says it as plain as can be amen?
The Lord has really been revealing so much depth and detail in His word for these characteristics He desires to bring out in us through our walk
SLIDE 4 “WISDOM CRIES ALOUD IN THE STREETS”
In walking by the spirit.... in having courageous faith and being humble.....The Lord is showings us the detailed blessings and benefits to encourage us to stay strong in Him
So let’s take in more of those benefits and blessing in today’s message from the Scripture supporting today’s title
SLIDE 5
20 Wisdom cries aloud in the street,
in the markets she raises her voice;
21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
Where does Wisdom speak? In the crowded streets and public places where busy people gather to take care of the business of life.
The message of God’s truth is made for the marketplace, not the ivory tower; we must share it “at the head of the noisy streets”.
Wisdom even went to the city gate where the leaders were transacting official business.
No matter where people are, they need to hear Wisdom’s call.
To whom does wisdom speak?
SLIDE 6
22 “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing
and fools hate knowledge?
23 If you turn at my reproof,
behold, I will pour out my spirit to you;
I will make my words known to you.
Notice the three classes of people here.....it seems to be the lost
the simple ones, the scorners (scoffers or mockers), and the fools.
The simple are naive people who believe anything but examine nothing. They’re gullible and easily led astray
Scorners think they know everything and laugh at the things that are really important. While the simple one has a blank look on his face, the scorner wears a sneer.
Fools are people who are ignorant of truth because they’re dull and stubborn. Their problem isn’t a low IQ or poor education; their problem is a lack of spiritual desire to seek and find God’s wisdom.
We God’s plea in verse 22 saying, “how long?” implying how long will you remain in this dangerous spiritual condition?”
We will see that dangerous condition here shortly .......but you may be asking why is wisdom being personified as “she” or feminine
The word for wisdom in hebrew is hokmot and in the greek is sofia.....both the hebrew and greek are gendered feminine
SLIDE 7
WISDOM - specialized knowledge, understanding or skill
but why do you think wisdom is personified as feminine or she?
All throughout the proverbs Solomon has used this described wisdom as “she”
I was so amazed how Jesus did the same and was and again God does not miss a detail and He always backs up His word with His word…amen?
Keep in mind specialized knowledge, understanding or skill
Remember there is worldly wisdom, which has proved to be beneficial right? Examples........
But that wisdom is just wisdom......the kind Solomon and Jesus refer to is specialized.......the world or we ourselves just in the flesh do not see our wisdom and God’s wisdom the same....amen?
Jesus did a great job here and I will cover the feminine part as well....but check this out
So the setting here is John has been baptizing the people, the Pharisees and Scribes have a big problem with it and Jesus explains that John is the greatest of all prophets....explain
So then this is where we pick up after and Jesus I believe masterfully explains God’s wisdom and why feminine
SLIDE 8
31 “To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another,
“ ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’
notice Jesus uses children in this illustration and hang on to that.
now look at where they are at, this is awesome ya’ll......the “marketplace” where have just we heard that? Proverbs 1:20-21.
Why would you not dance when someone plays a flute or why would you not weep from a dirge
The New Living Translation says it like this
SLIDE 9
32 They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends,
‘We played wedding songs,
and you didn’t dance,
so we played funeral songs,
and you didn’t weep.’
And then Jesus goes on to tell why their worldly wisdom makes no sense to His wisdom....God’s wisdom
Check this out
SLIDE 10
33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.”
so first point here in Luke 7 story......no understanding why people are coming to get baptized.....no understanding why John is doing it.......look what their worldly wisdom or religious understanding looks like to them.....they thought he had a demon
This is even more cool and helps us to see how highly specialized the Lord’s wisdom is.......Who did Jesus share with His disciples in private that John really was?
Second point…children in the market place.....no understanding the wedding song..... so no dancing
No understanding of the funeral song so no weeping
So this is even more amazing to our last point in this story
This is the question I want to ask.....before you got saved did you really understand who Jesus was and what He really did?
Verse 34 here proves that right?
Jesus hits the home run here with verse 35
Jesus explains everything from Proverbs 1 which God put in Solomon to write roughly 925 years before Jesus tells this in Luke 7.
What does Jesus call wisdom here in verse 35? her......Jesus says she has children..... a mother nurtures and raise up her children and teaches
SLIDE 11 “WISDOM CRIES ALOUD IN THE STREETS”
When we receive Jesus’s saving grace by His blood and resurrection.....we become God’s children.....born again right?
He desires His wisdom now to nurture us and raise us up in His specialized knowledge, understanding and skills
Now remember...... it seems that The Lord has been building us up in all these different characteristics of being a follower of Christ.......showing us all these great blessings and benefits from walking by the Spirit........Having courageous faith.......and being humble before the Lord....right
The same with “Wisdom Cries Aloud in the Streets”
The Lord is fixing to show us the situation the lost are in.....and then bless us in what He desires to teach us in the nurturing wisdom as like a mother would give us
This is the situation of those without the saving grace of Jesus......being born again
SLIDE 12
29 Because they hated knowledge
and did not choose the fear of the Lord,
30 would have none of my counsel
and despised all my reproof,
31 therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way,
and have their fill of their own devices.
32 For the simple are killed by their turning away,
and the complacency of fools destroys them;
WORSHIP TEAM TO COME
Now the amazing grace, blessings and security we have in the nurturing wisdom He cried aloud to us, we heard and answered and received.
SLIDE 13
33 but whoever listens to me will dwell secure
and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”
