Text: Exodus 28:4, 36-39, 29:6-7
Intro: The word “mitre” signifies to wrap. The mitre of fine linen was wrapped around the head of the high priest. However, similarly to the ephod, it did not stand alone as the head dressing of the high priest.
Bearing the Iniquity:
Exodus 28:38 KJV 1900
And it shall be upon Aaron’s forehead, that Aaron may bear the iniquity of the holy things, which the children of Israel shall hallow in all their holy gifts; and it shall be always upon his forehead, that they may be accepted before the Lord.
For us to understand the picture given through the head garment of the high priest it is important that we first understand Biblically what iniquity is.
Exodus 34:7 KJV 1900
Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
If iniquity, sin, and transgression were all the same thing then we wouldn’t need forgiveness for all three of them...
Psalm 51:5 KJV 1900
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; And in sin did my mother conceive me.
The key to understand iniquity, is found in this verse. I was _______________ in iniquity…
Biblically we understand sin to be the ______________ of disobedience against the word of God in either our ignorance or our arrogance the Bible says we are without excuse. Transgression we understand to be the a willful rebellion against the word of the Lord. (Ex. 23:21, Lev. 6:2-3) Finally, we understand iniquity to be the very corrupt human nature inherited by our father which leads us all to sinfulness, and is the seed by which we fall short of the glory of God… Whether sin, iniquity, or transgression, we need a Saviour!
Read: Isaiah 53:1-12
As the burnt offering:
Leviticus 1:3–5 KJV 1900
If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord. And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him. And he shall kill the bullock before the Lord: and the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
As the peace offering:
Leviticus 3:2 KJV 1900
And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering, and kill it at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron’s sons the priests shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about.
As the sin offering:
Leviticus 4:4 KJV 1900
And he shall bring the bullock unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord; and shall lay his hand upon the bullock’s head, and kill the bullock before the Lord.
As the trespass offering:
Leviticus 5:6–8 KJV 1900
And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the Lord for his sin which he hath sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats, for a sin offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his sin. And if he be not able to bring a lamb, then he shall bring for his trespass, which he hath committed, two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, unto the Lord; one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering. And he shall bring them unto the priest, who shall offer that which is for the sin offering first, and wring off his head from his neck, but shall not divide it asunder:
All of the sacrifices were killed with the guilty parties hand on the head of the animal signifying the transfer of guilt upon the head of the animal… It is by the sacrifice and shed blood of the perfect Lamb of God that allows God to say, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” (Jer. 31:34)
Remember: Christ as the Lamb of God died for our sins, and that He became the High Priest of Heaven through His resurrection.
Leviticus 21:10 KJV 1900
And he that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes;
Compare this to,
Matthew 26:64–66 KJV 1900
Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy. What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.
It is very eye opening to see how far religion had removed God’s people from their relationship with Him In certain aspects Caiaphas fulfilled his role of high priest, by putting the guilt, upon the head of the guiltless...
Hebrews 9:24–28 KJV 1900
For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
Hebrews 7:24–27 KJV 1900
But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
Aaron as the high priest of Israel was not performing his duties for unbelieving Jews. These were believers, and followers of the Lord God… Even though his garments were declared for “________________ and ________________________” he was human and could not put away iniquity before God. The children of Israel came to God with sacrifice and offerings to be forgiven and to draw near, but how could they come again seeing that they were already reconciled by the shed blood of bullocks, lambs, and goats, only to continue sinning requiring more blood to be shed?
They needed someone to stand between, who would continually bear for them the iniquity of the “holy things which they shall hallow in all their holy gifts”. They needed someone to make these sacrifices and offerings acceptable before the Lord. Aaron fulfilled that role for the nation of Israel, and the Lord Jesus Christ, our great High Priest does this for us!
1 Peter 2:5 KJV 1900
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
Romans 12:1–2 KJV 1900
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Romans 15:16 KJV 1900
That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.
1 Timothy 2:1–6 KJV 1900
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
Closing: It is because of His sacrifice on the cross that we stand accepted by God in Him. It is because of His office as High Priest by which our sacrifice, service, thanksgiving, prayer, praise, and labour are made acceptable before the Lord. That doesn’t mean that He takes our filth and makes it something it isn’t, it means that he takes the obedience of an imperfect servant, and makes it perfectly acceptable before their Holy God!
