“The Great Reset”
2 Corinthian 5:16-17
I want to start this morning by saying Last week was awesome! Kristi and I had been gone for 3 weeks preaching, and getting back home was awesome. Seeing and hearing almost 20 kids up here singing and worshipping was better than the cherry on top.
To the parents of those kids and the volunteers that are working so hard with the kids of the Dome a giant thank you!!!!
A lot of the time people are guilty of saying “kids are the future of the church.” Over and over again, The Kids here prove that they are VERY MUCH part of making and being part of the history and story of the Dome!
I love their energy, excitement, goofy antics, and their energy.
With kids there aways seems to be something new. Just when we think we have them figured out…BOOM they surprise with something we didn’t expect!
Unfortunately, that seems to be how life goes for us too often!
Transition to Trials, Hardships, and Tribulations…
Physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual…
The fact is we all have times in life that we need a RESET!
The idea of a reset exists in Scripture from the very beginning. In Genesis 1 we see the first 6 days of creation. In Genesis 2:1-3 we see that God looked at creation and on the 7th day, he took a break. He reset. He rested. Was He wore out from creating the Atlantic ocean or the Himalayans? Was the Grand Canyon too much for Him?
Of Course Not! He is Omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. He was and is more powerful than we can begin to imagine. He didn’t NEED to rest, BUT HE KNEW WE WOULD.
SO, in His great omniscience He demonstrated what we needed to do.
Throughout Scripture…Beginning to end We see people, the Nation, and the entirety of creation in need of a Reset on a regular basis.
Just the next chapter over in Gen 3 we see the Fall. We see a new reset, but not in a good way. A few chapters later we read about the Flood…another Great rest. In Chapters 11 and 12 we read how God reset Abram’s life to bring life to a Nation that God would use to bring salvation to the entire world.
Leviticus 25 The Year of Jubilee…and the list goes on!
Transition to the NT and we see “THE GREAT RESET!”
If you want you can turn with me to John 19. I am going to read 3 short words out of verse 30.
“IT IS FINISHED!!!”
The Greatest Reset in all of History. It is the reset that resets every other worthwhile reset.
I’m not going to belabor the point of the crucifixion, but it was that single event that RESET the universe. It is the event that opened up the opportunity for every man, woman, and child to have a restored relationship with Jesus!
When Jesus said “It Is Finished,” when the veil of the temple tore from top to bottom, when rocks spilt in half and Jesus breathed His last breath, THE COVENANT RESET! The covenant that depended on sacrifice and good works was over.
Now the covenant is based on faith. It is based on a renewed relationship with the Father through Jesus. It is based on the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Even in saying all of that, even in the understanding that this isn’t a works-based religion, we have to understand that we play a part in our spiritual health.
God isn’t going to make us pray.
He isn’t going to make us study and spend time in His Word.
He isn’t going to make us do the right things.
So, if he isn’t going to make us do it, we have to make ourselves…better yet, we get to a place where we fall in love with doing the right things and they just become a regular part of our lives.
As we go about our day to day lives we have lots of choices to make. Maybe you made the right choices years ago and have been living the right life for many years.
Maybe at some point you slipped up and have struggled to get it right.
MARCH 3RD CAN BE YOUR NEW START!
MARCH 3RD CAN BE YOUR GREAT RESET!!!
If you have heard me preach more than once or twice you know that I got my Great Reset right here in this church. Right here in this sanctuary, back when we had stained carpet, pews, and ceiling fuzz on the floor because the kids drug their hands across it because they could reach it.
Y’all gotta know I LOVE MY WIFE AND I LOVE MY KIDS, BUT THE SINGLE GREATEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME OR FOR ME HAPPENED ON APRIL 4TH OF 2010 RIGHT HERE!!!
16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer.
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
This is the representation and the promise of what happens when we get the ultimate RESET!!!
OLD THINGS PASS AWAY; ALL THINGS BECOME NEW!
Back in the mid-90’s I did what A LOT of people did. I showed up to a place called Incredible Universe and bought my first computer.
Pentium 166, 2.5 gb HDD, 8mb ram…
As I do with most things, I dove in headfirst. I learned everything I could, tried to find ways to upgrade parts and pieces, and even went as far as getting a job at a small computer store fixing computers. (For transparency sake, I bought a Compaq, so I had to learn to fix computers.)
One of the greatest diagnostic tools I had was a key combination that would fix a large percentage of problems.
Ctrl-Alt-Del
I. Control – Give it to God
a. The control key opens up a new way for the keys to act. Ctrl-P etc.
b. The first step to a reset is recognizing there are other options. We all know what happens when you hit the A key on a standard keyboard. In the same way we know what happens when we do certain things in life. We get used to it and we count on it.
c. Proverbs 3:5–7
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
d. 2 Corinthians 5:7
e. Jesus Take the Wheel – Not just when we are in trouble! Let Him drive you before you hit the black ice.
f. A Great Reset requires that we give God Control over every area of our lives.
II. Alt – Let God direct you in His path
a. The Alt key shifts or modifies what the next key does. Example… Alt F4 closes a current window.
b. Unfortunately, most of us have been programmed by the world in most aspects of our lives. We “function” according to the rules of this world. WE LIVE AND OPERATE IN THE NATURAL. Our keyboard operates at face value. The Problem is that most Christians don’t understand how to “Modify” or use ALT commands for their lives. Just like MOST computer users don’t know a small percentage of the ALT functions on a windows system, most Christians don’t know or understand the promises of God.
c. The Promises of God SHOULD MODIFY the way that we live our lives…BUT WE HAVE TO KNOW THE PROMISES OF GOD!!!
i. https://www.gotquestions.org/promises-of-God.html
ii. 2 Corinthians 1:20
20 For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.
d. We have to know the modifiers! We have to know our part of seeing the promises fulfilled. We have to know that to see the windows of Heaven opened and blessings poured out means we have to be faithful in our tithe.
III. Delete – Ask God to Remove what doesn’t belong
a. The last “Key” to a reset is to remove the things that don’t belong. When I was in the computer industry we would have people hit control alt delete to restart their PC’s because they were locked up. The computer had entered a state where it no longer responded to the User’s (Master’s) commands. Ctrl-Alt-Delete RESETS the system. It dumps all the trash that had been stored in the memory. It allows the OS to get things the way they are supposed to be.
b. Acts 3:19
19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,
c. REAL QUESTION TIME… I don’t really want an answer, but I want you to take a minute to reflect on the question…
i. HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE THINGS IN YOUR LIFE THAT DON’T BELONG?
ii. HOW MANY OF YOU ARE DOING THINGS THAT YOU KNOW DON’T HONOR GOD?
d. For us to have a truly great reset, we are going to have to pray and submit ourselves to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to remove what doesn’t belong.
IV. Reset – Rest in Him
a. Acts 3:19
19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,
b. Psalm 46:10
10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
c. Psalm 103:12
12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
d. Mark 2:27
27 And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
So, where are you today? Are you in need of a reset? I would guess that after the way the last few years have been, we all need to be constantly resetting. We need to be hitting that Ctrl-Alt-Del on a regular basis.
We need to turn over CONTROL TO GOD
We need to MODIFY our actions to match our expectations of receiving His promises. We need to understand His promises.
We need to DELETE the things out of our lives that don’t honor God.
We need to REST in Him.
