Text John 5: 1-15
John 5:1–15 (NIV)
Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”
But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”
So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”
The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.
We are in our fresh start series and we are Journeying through the book of John.
(Talk about john for a minute)
I’m gonna give you a moment to screen shot this if you do not have it.
These are the lessons that we went over the past few weeks.
Last week we talked about the subject “It’s bigger than the wine”
It’s here where we discussed
Invitation
obedience and
immediate change.
however today we are in John Chapter 5.
Here’s how John 5 reads.
I’d like to talk about the subject.......Trapped.
It's like being stuck in a maze with no clear exit...
Have you ever felt that way?
Stuck in a situation where no matter which direction you turn, you can't seem to find your way out and you somehow end up bumping your head?
Today, we're delving into a passage from John 5:1-14 that illustrates a profound truth about feeling trapped and the hope for freedom that awaits us.
Let's dive in and uncover what this ancient text has to say about our modern struggles and the freedom that is within our hands.
I want to ask the question what was it that had him trapped?
He was trapped because of his
Contentment
Imagine this,
There is a man who because of something he had done been an invalad for 38 years.
It was in that day where they believed if something happened to you, then 9 times out of 10 it was because of something you did.
It is here now we see this man has been lying there for 38 years comes in contact with jesus, with a question about change and he immediately gives an excused.
Imagine an opportunity to get better and the first thing you do is give an excuse?
He was content!!!
He was okay with not being OKAY.
YOUR CONTENTMENT CAN KEEP YOU BOUND.
BECAREFUL BECAUSE YOUR CONTENTMENT WILL KEEP YOU IN A PLACE WHERE GOD WANTS TO TAKE YOU.
2. He was trpped because of his
LACK OF COMMITMENT.
IT WASNT HIS ARMS THAT WHERE BOUND IT WAS his legs.
if you want to get out of something. you have to commit to growth and change.
He said I have no one to put me in.
Why is everyone having to be more committed to your growth than you?
contentment
commitment
choices
3. Choices
someone said at a funeral.
you come into this world looking like your parents,
you die looking like your choises.
one encounter with jesus brought immediate change.
