To provide a chronological timeline of the life of Abraham as described in the Bible, we'll follow the major events in his life according to biblical references, focusing on the sequence and the ages at which these events occurred. This timeline is based on the narrative found primarily in Genesis chapters 12 through 25.
Birth of Abram: Born in Ur of the Chaldees to Terah (Genesis 11:26-32). The exact age at which Abram was born is not specified in Genesis, but Jewish tradition places his birth at 1948 years after the creation of the world, according to the Hebrew calendar.
God's Call: Abram is called by God at age 75 to leave Haran and go to Canaan (Genesis 12:1-4). This marks the beginning of his covenantal relationship with God.
Arrival in Canaan: Abram arrives in Canaan, where God promises to give the land to his offspring (Genesis 12:5-7).
Sojourn in Egypt: Due to a famine, Abram and Sarai go down to Egypt. Pharaoh takes Sarai into his palace, but God intervenes, and they leave Egypt with wealth (Genesis 12:10-20).
Separation from Lot: Abram and Lot separate to avoid conflict between their herdsmen. Abram dwells in Canaan, and Lot settles near Sodom (Genesis 13).
God's Covenant: The covenant between God and Abram is affirmed, promising Abram descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky (Genesis 15). Abram is 86 years old when Hagar bears Ishmael to him (Genesis 16:16).
Name Change and Circumcision Covenant: At age 99, Abram's name is changed to Abraham, and the covenant of circumcision is established (Genesis 17).
Birth of Isaac: Isaac is born to Abraham and Sarah when Abraham is 100 years old, fulfilling God's promise (Genesis 21:1-5).
The Test: God tests Abraham's faith by asking him to sacrifice Isaac, his only son with Sarah, but God stops him at the last moment (Genesis 22).
Death of Sarah: Sarah dies at age 127 in Hebron (Genesis 23).
Marriage of Isaac: Abraham sends his servant to find a wife for Isaac. The servant returns with Rebekah, and Isaac marries her (Genesis 24).
Later Years and Death: Abraham marries Keturah and has six more sons. Abraham dies at age 175 and is buried alongside Sarah in the Cave of Machpelah (Genesis 25:1-10).
