6 And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,
16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.
The Fruit of the Spirit An Attribute of God
The purpose of divine patience is to bring men to repentance (Romans 2:4). It is important to remember that God’s patience is patience with a purpose. It is very strong and purposeful. It is not a mere passive endurance that has no particular end in view. In this it differs from mere resignation to the inevitable.
4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;
The purpose of divine patience is to bring men to repentence:
4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy;

Two things are specially striking about this verse. First, the purpose of such a divine enduement of power should be patience.

The second noteworthy thing in this passage is that we are to be patient with joyfulness:
“longsuffering with joy”
