RECAP
29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.
Who is someone in your life that is “righteous” and why?
A part of living a righteous life is declaring war on the sin in your life and seeking to put it to death.
Today, I wanted to take a moment to give you some practical tools on how to defeat your sin and put it to death...
Our core passage for today’s class is...
5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming.
(We talked about the difference between living in sin and sinning occasionally. )
Who are we before Christ after we have been saved by faith through grace?
*Think of one sin in your life you feel as if you truly cannot put to death...
The scriptures basic ethical imperative is this: BE WHAT YOU ALREADY ARE.
11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
This is our current state before God.
We made a decision to break with unholiness
We are declared as Holy
13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
Here is the deal:
God’s message is not, “You are not Holy yet, work on it until you get there...”
It is...
“You are holy, be what you already are in Christ.”
Because of this, we can make what we do line-up with who He says we are.
This is why Paul says...
12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
Sin dies, or we die.
Sin dies, or we die.
23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
This is a true reality for us- Sin is what separated us from God and changed the trajectory of our lives from living in harmony with God for eternity to living in brokenness and separated from God forever...
But because of His work on the cross, God’s sovereign redemptive plan allows us to live in the assurance of our salvation and offers us hope in this life.
We can experience freedom.
1. Take heart that your old self has been killed.
1. Take heart that your old self has been killed.
6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
Think about the process of crucifixion.. It is a process of death, a slow death.
Be assured that it has been crucified. Ultimately, in the sight of God, this work has be DONE, even when we may still be in the process of it dying. He has declared this TRUE.
All for what purpose?
FREEDOM.
24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
What passage is before this verse? (Fruits of the Spirit)
2. Constantly consider it’s death and live in freedom.
2. Constantly consider it’s death and live in freedom.
11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
You’ll see a lot of these steps are centered around the renewal of your mind. If we can take captive our thoughts, we can win the battle.
Walk around the world and acknowledge brokenness followed by the Biblical truth of the work Christ has done, is doing, and will do.
Where do you see brokenness the most? How do you think about it? Ignore it? Laugh at it?
3. Ponder how sin is your enemy, it killed Jesus.
3. Ponder how sin is your enemy, it killed Jesus.
Grow in hatred for sin!
(Again)
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Death is the consequence of your sin.
Who has been affected by this sin in the world that you love?
What did it take to save you from this sin.... An innocent man who was your creator. This is personal.
4. Refuse to be bullied by sin.
4. Refuse to be bullied by sin.
Were you ever bullied? Taken advantage of? Laughed at? Your failures and embarrassment enjoyed by others?
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.
*Any questions or thoughts?
5. Don’t make any plans with sin.
5. Don’t make any plans with sin.
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
This comes at a cost...
This may require sacrificing or cutting yourself off from something that is of normality in the world.
This may even mean cutting off something in your life that others won’t understand.
29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
6. Seek to be in the world, but not like it.
6. Seek to be in the world, but not like it.
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
20 And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
A ship is built for the water… but when the ship begins to take on the water, it dies. - DL Moody
What are we transformed by?
Your old self, also referred to your inner self, is what comes out of your heart… for that defiles a man.
We are waging war against sin, not just seen as action, but as a disease that is being washed out by the blood of Jesus.
This is a battle of the mind and Spirit.
16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.
7. Choose God’s team and put on His jersey.
7. Choose God’s team and put on His jersey.
13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.
You wear his jersey. This is a rivalry!
8. Admit failure and confess sin every day.
8. Admit failure and confess sin every day.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Spend time with God daily, discuss your struggles, rest in the assurance of His promises...
*Questions/Thoughts?
9. Seek the Spirit’s help and His partnership in this battle.
9. Seek the Spirit’s help and His partnership in this battle.
(Again)
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Living by the spirit means walking in the conviction of god’s truth leaning on His promptings for the sake of the discernment of His will.
27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
Ezekiel is promising a new covenant by which the Spirit will dwell within us. God has been working since the beginning!
10. Be encouraged in Fellowship.
10. Be encouraged in Fellowship.
13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
We need each other… God has created us to be connected. Simple as that.
11. Create your battle plan against impulses.
11. Create your battle plan against impulses.
27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
We discipline ourselves so that in the end, we can say these words...
7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
How do you start your day?
How do you end it?
Our christian life is marked by our self-control...
This is the difference between rhythm and habits...
What do you do in your life that helps against the battle against sin and the flesh?
12. Fight with confidence in His promises.
12. Fight with confidence in His promises.
11 To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power,
