Genesis 1:1–2 NASB95

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

darkness (know heavens are dark because light does not exist until the end of day one)

Some may think, okay God created the heavens and the earth but where did the darkness and water come from? Darkness and water are all part of what God created when He created the heavens and the earth. The Bible is simply describing the stage in which the earth existed, in the darkness of the heavens, as a formless watery void.
