Who is Barrabas?
The Lexham Bible Dictionary Barabbas in the Passion Story
Each of the gospels describes Barabbas differently. John contains the least detail concerning Barabbas (John 18:40), referring to Barabbas as a robber or revolutionary. In Matthew 27:16, Barabbas is a notorious prisoner. In Mark 15:7 Barabbas is a rebel or insurrectionist, and in Luke 23:19 he has been part of an insurrection. Mark and Luke both mention that Barabbas has committed murder.
His name means, son of the father
and that is all that is really known of the mean....
he was a murderer, a leader of revolt against the Romans...
all of the qualifications to be in prison....
he was a bad man…a sinner....
then here is Jesus....also on trial....TALK, PREACH(THAT HAS PERFORMED MIRCALES)
not for anything that He has done but because the religious leaders wanted Him gone......TALK, PREACH..( everyone that call themselves a child of God is not....wolves in sheep clothing)
the mob had chosen Barabbas...The people choose rather to have Barabbas released, a wretched fellow, that had nothing to recommend him to their favour but the daringness of his crimes.
his crimes against the Romans…the people were tired of the Romans and was looking for a Messiah to come lead them in a revolt...
that was their idea of freedom but Jesus was talking about something different then they wanted to hear....LOVE YOUR ENEMY, PRAY FOR YOUR ENEMY.....TALK, PREACH...
before I go any further If anyone should be able to say, “Jesus died for me,” it was Barabbas. He knew what it was to have Jesus die on his behalf, the innocent for the guilty.....TALK, PREACH....
but as we prepare for Easter weekend, we need not be to judgemental of Barabbas, because there some Barabbas’ in 2024....
Lets walk.....
First this text shows us the guilty...
Luke 23:19 “who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder.”
there was no doubt in anyones mind that he was guilty....
his resume spoke for itself....
some theologians think that Barabbas may have been a leader of the Jewish Zealots who at that time was working for the overthrow of Rome.
either way he was guilty.....
not trying to step on any toes but just want everyone to realize THAT YOU ARE JUST AS GUILTY...
what does Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
you may not be a murder or lead a revolt but you have sinned.....TALK, PREACH....
even over in Isaiah, we are called filthy rags....
people do not like to admit that they are not all of that....TALK, PREACH.....
Barrabas was guilty, we are guilty but the good news is about to come....
THE GUILTY WAS SET FREE....
Luke 23:25 “And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.”
The crowd rejected Jesus and embraced Barabbas, who was a terrorist and a murderer.
John 1:11 “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.”
after He had done and all they saw, they chose barrabas...
Jesus was sentenced to death and Barrabas was set free..
Barrabas wasnt the only guilty set free that day....
I can hear Jesus now....John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”
John 3:17 “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”
If Jesus had not been there at that particular time in Barabbas’ life, he would have died...
But Jesus....
Is there anybody, that knows you have been set free....
Sis Goldie you posted some powerful lyrics the other day...
My chains are gone, I've been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy reigns
Unending love
Amazing grace
We are guilty, but He made a way....
TALK, PREACH, CLOSE....
