John 13:18–38 NKJV
“I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’ Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.” Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke. Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke. Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night. So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately. Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward.” Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake.” Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times.

Jesus now makes three troubling predictions.

In regard to Judas’s defection (13:18–30)

1. The Scripture (13:18–25):

Jesus quotes from Psalm 41:9, which predicts his betrayal.
John 13:18–25 NKJV
Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”
V. 18 Jesus chose the 12.
12 men singled out of all others as His Disciples and 11 grew to be Apostles used by Him to spread the gospel and plant churches all over.
1, Judas, was a betrayer from day 1.
Jesus had selected them and knew each of them and role they would play perfectly
It is a bit odd to think of it.
A fox among the hens
He knew He was heading to the cross.
He knew the gospel required it
atonement had to be made for all of our sins
He knew He would be betrayed
And He welcomed the betrayer and treated Him with love as one of His own for His entire ministry.
Judas and His actions were a fulfillment of
Psalm 41:9 NKJV
Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.
Jesus reminded them of it now, so that as the events unfolded, they would remember. He was still doing signs to verify His divinity
V. 20 Receives us, receive Him
Jesus ties reception of His disciples to Himself
Receive us
Receive him
Receive Father
v. 21 He was troubled
This is the same word from 12:27
Deep horror and anxiety
As the ordeal was beginning, He knew all that would unfold and it was a crushing weight upon His heart.
V 23 They want to know who the betrayer is
The Disciple whom Jesus loved
reference to John
Strangely, this is the 1st reference to John in the gospel of John
They enquire about the betrayer and Jesus gave them

2. The sign (13:26–30):

Jesus says the one sharing the bread with him is the traitor.
John 13:26–30 NKJV
Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
Jesus gave the bread to Judas
MacArthur Study Bible NASB (Commentary)
The host at a feast (whose role was filled by Jesus) would dip into a common bowl and pull out a particularly tasty bit and pass it to a guest as a special mark of honor or friendship.
Because Jesus passed it so easily to Judas, it has been suggested that he was seated near the Lord in a place of honor. Jesus was demonstrating a final gesture of His love for Judas even though he would betray Him.
What a display of LOVE!
Satan entered Judas
At this time, Judas was possessed by Satan himself in his betrayal of Jesus
He is completely sold out to Satan
Judas begins the betrayal
Judas leaves (to gathered the temple guards and lead them to Jesus).
The disciples haven’t put 2 and 2 together yet and think maybe he is headed out to purchase something!

In regard to Jesus’ departure (13:31–35)

With Judas gone, the final events are in motion and Jesus encourages the 11 faithful disciples
He looks beyond the agony of the cross to the glorification to come

1. He must leave (13:31–33).

John 13:31–33 NKJV
So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately. Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you.
Jesus is preparing them for His departure
He references the ascension to heaven:
Acts 1:9–11 NKJV
Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”
They won’t be able to follow Him at that time, but they will eventually follow at the time of their own death and resurrection.

2. They must love (13:34–35):

John 13:34–35 NKJV
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
He commands them to love one another as he has loved them.
While they waited, they were to love as He loved
This is what Jesus expects of His disciples both then and now
Love each other
This is a reitteration of Lev 19:18
Leviticus 19:18 NKJV
You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
Loving God was the most important commandment, and loving each other is #2.
We must Love our Neighbors
As Christ loved us
He is about to demonstrate His love as He goes to the cross to atone for sins and open the way of eternal life to all of us
This is a new standard.
it is Sacrificial
It is produced through the new covenant by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit
Romans 13:8–10 NKJV
Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
We must be known for our love
That is our calling card!
Love as Christ loved NOT the way the world thinks He loved!
Today, many have “love” all twisted up
They think Jesus commanded us and demonstrated that loving others means accepting everyone just as they are and never calling for a change!
It is true, He accepts us just as we are
We don’t have to change a lot and work on ourselves to be presentable to God.
No matter how hard we try, we will never be presentable to him
However, He doesn’t leave us as He finds us!
Once we repent an cast all our trust on Him, He changes us!
Just as I am
Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind Sight, riches, healing of the mind Yea, all I need, in Thee to find O Lamb of God, I come, I come
Just as I am, Thou wilt receive Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve Because Thy promise I believe O Lamb of God, I come, I come
Jesus cleanses us, forgives us, and adopts us as His brothers and sisters in the royal family of GOD
His final words to many He encoutered were “go and sin no more”

In regard to Peter’s denials (13:36–38):

Peter declarer he will die for Jesus
Jesus says that before the rooster crows, Peter will deny him three times!
John 13:36–38 NKJV
Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward.” Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake.” Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times.
Jesus work was nearly finished, theirs was truly beginning
They couldn’t follow
Only Jesus could be presented as the sinless sacrifice on the cross for the trespasses of the world and die. Only He could be glorified in the presence of the Father as He returned to heaven
Peter means well
He acts from the heart
Here at the table it was easy to pledge to follow Jesus even if it cost his own life
Jesus knew better
He predicted and thus forewarned Peter of the coming denial.
This very night, Peter will be confronted by Jesus’ enemies and the curious crowd and 3 times he will deny being a follower of and knowing Jesus.
AP: Sunday morning vs. Foxhole faith
It easy for us this morning to proclaim our love and devotion to Jesus
There is pressure here in this service to be on fire for God!
However, when we leave in a few minutes, the pressure from the world is the opposite: we will be tempted and pressured into denying the Lord
Do we have faith in foxhole? In our battleground and mission field rolled all into 1?
Living for Jesus is more difficult than proclaiming we will live for Him
Yet we must!
