Job 22:1–30 NASB 2020
Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded, “Can a strong man be of use to God, Or a wise one be useful to himself? “Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous, Or gain if you make your ways blameless? “Is it because of your reverence that He punishes you, That He enters into judgment against you? “Is your wickedness not abundant, And is there no end to your guilty deeds? “For you have seized pledges from your brothers without cause, And stripped people naked. “You have given the weary no water to drink, And you have withheld bread from the hungry. “But the earth belongs to the powerful man, And the one who is honorable dwells on it. “You have sent widows away empty, And the strength of orphans has been crushed. “Therefore traps surround you, And sudden dread terrifies you, Or darkness, so that you cannot see, And a flood of water covers you. “Is God not in the height of heaven? Look also at the highest stars, how high they are! “But you say, ‘What does God know? Can He judge through the thick darkness? ‘Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see; And He walks on the vault of heaven.’ “Will you keep to the ancient path Which wicked people have walked, Who were snatched away before their time, Whose foundations were washed away by a river? “They said to God, ‘Go away from us!’ And ‘What can the Almighty do to them?’ “Yet He filled their houses with good things; But the advice of the wicked is far from me. “The righteous see and are glad, And the innocent mock them, saying, ‘Truly our enemies are eliminated, And fire has consumed their abundance.’ “Be reconciled with Him, and be at peace; Thereby good will come to you. “Please receive instruction from His mouth, And put His words in your heart. “If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored; If you remove injustice far from your tent, And put your gold in the dust, And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks, Then the Almighty will be your gold And abundant silver to you. “For then you will take pleasure in the Almighty And lift up your face to God. “You will pray to Him, and He will hear you; And you will pay your vows. “You will also decide something, and it will be established for you; And light will shine on your ways. “When they have brought you low, you will speak with confidence, And He will save the humble person. “He will rescue one who is not innocent, And he will be rescued due to the cleanness of your hands.”

22 Then a Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
b Can a man be profitable unto God,
|| As he c that is wise may be profitable unto himself?
Is it any d pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous?
Or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
Will he reprove thee for fear of thee?
Will he e enter with thee into judgment?
Is not thy wickedness great?
And thine iniquities infinite?
For thou hast f taken a pledge from thy brother for nought,
And stripped the g naked of their clothing.
Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink,
And thou h hast withholden bread from the hungry.
But as for the mighty man, i he had the earth;
And the honourable man dwelt in it.
Thou hast k sent widows away empty,
And l the arms of m the fatherless have been broken.
10  Therefore n snares are round about thee,
And sudden fear troubleth thee;
11  Or darkness, that thou canst not see;
And o abundance of p waters cover thee.
12  Is not God in q the height of heaven?
And behold the height of the stars, how high they are!
13  And thou sayest, || r How doth God know?
Can he judge through the s dark cloud?
14  t Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not;
And he walketh in the u circuit of heaven.
15  Hast thou x marked the old way
Which wicked men have trodden?
16  Which were y cut down z out of time,
Whose foundation was overflown with a flood:
17  a Which said unto God, Depart from us:
And b what can the Almighty do || c for them?
18  Yet he filled their houses with good things:
But d the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
19  e The righteous see it, and are glad:
And the innocent f laugh them to scorn.
20  Whereas our || substance is not cut down,
But || the remnant of them g the fire consumeth.
21  h Acquaint now thyself || with him, and i be at peace:
Thereby good shall come unto thee.
22  Receive, I pray thee, the law from j his mouth,
And lay up his words in thine heart.
23  k If thou return to the Almighty, l thou shalt be built up,
Thou shalt put away m iniquity far from thy n tabernacles.
24  Then shalt thou lay up gold || as dust,
And the gold of o Ophir as the stones of the brooks.
25  Yea, the Almighty shall be thy || defence,
And thou shalt have plenty of silver.
26  For then shalt thou p have thy delight in the Almighty,
And q shalt lift up thy face unto God.
27  Thou shalt r make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee,
And thou shalt s pay thy vows.
28  Thou shalt also t decree a thing, and u it shall be established unto thee:
And x the light shall shine upon thy ways.
29  When men y are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up;
And z he shall save the humble person.
30  || He shall deliver the island of the innocent:
And it is delivered by a the pureness of thine hands.1

Revelation From God
Author
The author of the Job in unknown, there are those that believe Moses penned it, or possible Elihu the forth friend of Job. As the language and possible date of the writing leads to Abraham time frame, the author could be Enoch.
Date
The book of Job is one of the earliest known writings, dating to an Abraham time frame. Job’s wealth is measure in live stock as was Abraham, Issac and Jacob. The Hebrew word for Almighty, Shaddai, is used for YHWH throughout the book of Job, which is only otherwise found in Genesis and the Book of Enoch, thus placing the writing in same time frame as Enoch and Genesis.
History
The Book of Job is set in the Abraham time frame as Job's wealth is measured in livestock (Job_1:3; Job_42:12), the same way Abraham and Jacob's wealth are measured (Gen_12:16; Gen_13:2; Gen_30:43; Gen_32:5). (2) The Sabeans and Chaldeans are portrayed as nomadic marauders (Job_1:15, Job_1:17), indicating an early date. (3) The Hebrew word for piece of silver in Job (Job_42:11) is otherwise found only in conjunction with the patriarch Jacob (Gen_33:19; Jos_24:32). (4) Without a priesthood or a sanctuary, Job offered sacrifices to God in a patriarchal fashion (Job_1:5). (5) Job's longevity is consistent with the life spans of the patriarchs (Job_42:16). (6) The preference in the poetic sections of the book for the divine name Shaddai over the divine name Yahweh may indicate a period before the Exodus (Exo_3:14-15). The text indicates that the events of Job occurred in the land of Uz (Job_1:1), but the location of Uz is unknown. That Job was the greatest among the people of the East (Job_1:3) indicates that Job lived east of the Jordan River. Some have concluded that Uz was located in Syria or northwest Mesopotamia. However, most writers think Uz was located near Edom, because many of the proper names in the Book of Job occur in the genealogy of Esau, the father of the Edomites (Gen. 36).1
