Bread of Life Week 3
John 6:41-51
INTRODUCTION
ILL- Missing the obvious in front of our face. (Refrigerator)
Set Up Passage
Feeding of the 5000
Jesus sends disciples to the other side.
He walks on the water.
People come back to find Jesus- they want another miracle and free food.
They get in boats and find Jesus on other side with his disciples.
They ask for more food.
Jesus explains he could satisfy them for eternity. They want food,
John 6:41–51 ESV
41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— 46 not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

5 Reasons They Missed Jesus

1. Failure to Respect Jesus (42)

John 6:42 ESV
42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
Judge with physical eyes/ not spiritual eyes.
Prophet without honor
ILL- Pastoring Wewoka
They were missing who Jesus was telling them that he is.
Jesus is warning them of the consequences of missing him.

2. Failure to Hear Jesus(43-45)

John 6:43–45 ESV
43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me—
Must be drawn by God. How does God draw man? Through His Word.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
John 6:45 ESV
45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me—
all have heard- but not everyone comes to Jesus.
God calls all of man and all of man is held accountable
Romans 10:14–17 ESV
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Only those who listen and learn and then follow.
We must use God's Word.
It's great to testify about what God is doing in your life.
But you need to share God's Word.
That means you must know God's Word.

3. Failure to See Jesus (46)

John 6:46 ESV
46 not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father.
Jesus is essence of God's glory.
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
John 1:18 ESV
18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
We cannot see God, but Jesus has revealed him to us.
John 14:6–11 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
We need to help people see Jesus. Cannot see without light.
Light of the world.
ILL— putting phone in pocket with the light on. Faint glow through jeans.
We are to shine bright. Not a faint light that few will notice.

4. Failure to Believe Jesus (47)

John 6:47 ESV
47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Believe- what does it mean to believe?
Demons believe-
There are people who believe who are still his enemy and defy him.
Believe is Trust= surrender. Trust that Jesus is the only way to salvation.
Belief, Faith, Lord= all work the same way- surrender
This fits what Jesus has been teaching throughout John.
Jesus is offering salvation to those who put their trust in him.
Believe he is who he says he is.
Faith that he has provided salvation.
Lord- not my way but your way.

5. Failure to Receive Jesus(48-50)

John 6:48–50 ESV
48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.
The bread must be accepted.
Jews had to go out and gather the manna.
Jesus will not force himself on you.
51= the cross- Our life is possible because of his death.
John 6:51 ESV
51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
John is concerned with theology- he writes looking through the cross, back to the life of Jesus.
He understands the theological implications he is making.
This points to the cross.
We must accept that gift.
Jesus already paid the price for us but we must accept it.
Romans 10:13 ESV
13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
CONCLUSION

Have you missed Jesus?

Have you caused others to miss Jesus?
