I. A good love story and the gift of love.
II. God’s love is greater in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
III. What’s Love Got to Do with It?
IV. True love and Lent and John 3:14–15 “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.”
V. The lifting up of the Son of Man.
VI. Read John 3:17 and comment. John 3:17 tells us, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
VII. The gift of our Baptism.
VIII. Not saved by trying hard, but by God’s gracious favor.
IX. Not saved by good works, but by God’s love and gift of faith and Ephesians 2:8–10 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
X. Conclusion. Thinking about that Tina Turner song again, maybe the better question might be: “What has Jesus Christ’s love got to do, got to do with it?” Everything. Because of Christ and his Lenten love for us, we as believers will never perish but have eternal life in him. If you do not remember anything else in this sermon, remember that verse in John 3:16 that points to Jesus’ great love in action: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Amen.
