John Ch.9 Jesus heals a Blind Man
John Ch.9 Jesus heals a Blind Man
Two weeks ago, we learned about the I AM statements Jesus made.
14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
Jesus is God in human skin
the “I AM”
Today, we’re reading about a miracle that Jesus did for a blind man. Remember, a miracle is something only God can do.
Read John 9:1-7
1 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. 4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. 7 And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.
The Problem of Blindness
Infirmities such as the blind, deaf, lame, paralysis, many disabilities, including sickness & death.
In this passage we will find Blindness is Physical and Spiritual.
Jesus saw a blind man
while other walk past the needy, ignore such a blind man, its because we are unable to heal these disabilities.
Modern Medicine & technology has limitations.
Jesus has no limitations.
ATTRIBUTE: OMNIPOTENT
Jesus saw him.
Jesus see us in our time of need, he is filled with compassion and love.
7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
ATTRIBUTE: LOVE
2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
in Old Testament times the Jewish taught (doctrine) if you were sick with disease, or infirmities, if you had disabilities, it was a result of person sin, or the parents sinned. (v.34)
The disciples asked: Who Sinned?
Jesus answered ; “neither”
THE PURPOSE:
3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.
“it was so that the works of God might be seen in him.
The works of God>
4 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5 The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”
Jesus referenced Isaiah 35:5–6
4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.
Jesus worked very hard at ministry. He work hard to reach everyone he could while he was on earth.
2 Peter 3:9 “9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”
I read that Jesus touched and healed so many people that Palestine was nearly eradicated (put an end to) of sickness and suffering. He healed thousands of people.
with one word, one touch, “let it be done according to your faith”

5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
while Jesus was in the world, he gave light to the world by healing people. by teaching the spiritual truth about salvation.
John 1:4 “4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.”
John 1:9 “9 There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.”
John 8:12 “12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.””
BLINDFOLD ILLUS.
This healing is a living parable illustrating Jesus’ ministry as the light shinning in the dark world.
THE POWER
6 When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. 7 And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.
How did Jesus heal the blind man?
He spit on the ground to made mud, anointed the blind man’s eyes, and told the man to go and wash his eyes in the pool of Siloam.
We’ve seen Jesus heal people:
by the power of his word,
by touching them,
and even when he wasn’t near the sick person.
This time, Jesus used dirt and mud.
As God the Son, Jesus had the power to heal this man
and he did it for the purpose of bringing glory to God.
Summary vv.13-34
Like many of Jesus’ miracles, his healing of the blind man caused people to notice. Neighbors and others who had seen the blind man before wondered, “Isn’t that the same man who sat and begged for money?” Some said, “Yes, it’s the same guy” while others replied, “No, it couldn’t be. It must be someone who just looks like him.”
All the while, the healed man insisted, “No, no, it’s me. I’m that same man!” When the people asked him how his eyes were opened, the healed man explained, “Jesus did it. He put mud on my eyes, and after I washed, I could see.”
The people brought the man to the Pharisees because it was a Sabbath day when he was healed. Remember, healing on the Sabbath was against the made-up Jewish laws. As the religious leaders of the day, the Pharisees and scribes were the ones who questioned people who broke the law.
The Pharisees made a big deal about questioning the healed man because they wanted to !nd something to accuse Jesus of. The group was divided; some thought Jesus was a sinner for healing on the Sabbath while others thought his miracles proved he wasn’t a sinner. The man on trial made it clear that he had been blind and Jesus healed him. He believed Jesus was a prophet from God. But the Pharisees refused to believe this miracle even happened.
Even his parents were afraid of the Jewish rulers. They knew that if they said Jesus was the Christ, they would be punished. They didn’t want to be put out of the synagogue for saying Jesus had done a miracle from God. Being put out of the synagogue was a severe punishment to keep people out permanently—they would never be allowed to return. The healed man was old enough to speak for himself, so his parents told the Pharisees to let him answer the questions so that they could keep out of trouble.
But did the healed man let fear keep him from telling what he knew? NO! This man knew what had happened to him. Whether the Pharisees believed him or not didn’t make any dierence—the man was blind, and now he could see. There was no question in his mind that Jesus had worked a miracle.
In the end, the healed man accepted the simple truth—that Jesus must be from God—while the Pharisees rejected it. The Pharisees responded in anger by kicking the man out of the synagogue. He would not be allowed to come back.
Spiritual Sight and Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?” 36 He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?” 37 And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you.” 38 Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” And he worshiped Him.
We have learned this passage reveals the characteristic of both spiritual sight (on the part of the bind man) and spiritual blindness (on the part of the Pharisee's)
lets keep reading...
Spiritual sight requires God’s power. When Jesus heard the man was put out of the synagogue (kicked out of the church) Jesus went to find him. Just as Jesus did in granting the blind man physical sight, the Lord showed His power to open his eyes spiritually. If God did not take the imitative in Salvation, to act on our behalf in salvation, no one would be saved.
SINNER CANNOT SAVE THEMSELVES.
Was the blind man able to restore his own sight? so also the spiritually blind cannot live, or see life by there own will or power.
ATTRIBUTES:
SALVATION DEPENDS ON GODS LOVE, HIS POWER, AND SOVEREIGN GRACE

in contrast—
39 And Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.” 40 Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him, “Are we blind also?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.
