THE KINGDOM OF GOD
And he said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.”
in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven, because he causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust.
WHAT IS OUR CALLING AS CHRISTIANS:
TO LOVE JESUS AND TO LOVE LIKE JESUS
HOW DOES JESUS LOVE?
in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven, because he causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust.
I. LOVE PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE (ZACCHAEUS)
And he entered and traveled through Jericho. And there was a man named Zacchaeus, and he was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.
And when he came to the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, because it is necessary for me to stay at your house today!”
And Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I am giving to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I am paying it back four times as much!” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham.
YOU INITIATE THE RELATIONSHIP
II. LOVE PEOPLE FOR WHO THEY ARE (PETER)
And Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God!”
And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, God forbid, Lord! This will never happen to you!”
But he turned around and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a cause for stumbling to me, because you are not intent on the things of God, but the things of people!”
But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you.”
YOU PRIORITIZE THE RELATIONSHIP
III. LOVE PEOPLE FOR HOW THEY ARE (JUDAS)
(Now he said this not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the money box, he used to steal what was put into it.)
And he answered and said, “The one who dips his hand in the bowl with me—this one will betray me. The Son of Man is going just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if that man had not been born.” And Judas, the one who was betraying him, answered and said, “Surely I am not he, am I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said it.”
Then he poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them dry with the towel which he had tied around himself.
