Introduction: Master of the House
A fundamentally Christian work
Middle earth, like the more ancient expressions of the faith, is imbued with the divine. (just trying to say that worship of God is the fuel and goal of all of the following characteristics). The fabrics chosen, the candle holders, the arrangement of everything has meaning.
Emulation and the power of story
How fantasy/fiction helps us learn hard lessons without having to actually go through them. Also it helps us see the transcendentals clearer by putting them in a foreign place.
A vision of masculinity
Tolkien doesn’t claim to be Elrond, but Elrond is the pinnacle of the masculine vision. And thus his house is transformed into a place of flourishing. He is Adam, and his home is Edenic.
