Review last weeks 8 points:

Poverty is not an excuse to not give
Giving is a privilege to share in the ministry of others
Give yourself first!
Giving is proof of your love of God
5. Christ is our example of the GREATER giver
6. If you purpose to make a commitment to give, be faithful to follow through
7. Give willingly, from what God has blessed you with. Not from what you don’t have
8. Do not give to the point of poverty, but to the point of equality

Remember that Paul was writing to the church at Colosse teaching them the principles of giving. He was using the churches in Macedonia as his example. Paul was gathering offerings to help the believers in Jerusalem that were in a tough time of persecution. The believers in Colosse had made a commitment to give a year before. So PAUL sends Titus to urge them to follow through with their pledge.

Lets turn to 2 Corinthians 9:1-15

Verses 1-5 Let’s focus on the last phrase of verse 5 “that it may be ready as a matter of generosity and not as a grudging obligation.”

**Paul is pointing out to them that there are two ways of giving:

1. One way is through generosity that flows from experiencing God’s blessing and from trusting in the sufficiency of God’s grace! This type of giver realizes that everything he or she has is by God’s grace and that God can be depended on for his or her future needs......(this is the same principle of Salvation!)

2. The second way is the kind of begrudging greediness and self-reliance that selfishly seeks to keep as much as possible for oneself!

This type of giver views everything as a deserved reward to be hoarded out of insecurity and self-gratification, which are fundamental acts of unbelief in the faithfulness and goodness of God

Verses 6- 8 Paul lays out more principles of giving for the believers at Colosse to consider:

1. What you sow you will also reap. Verse 6 Bountifully also means generously

2. Give as you have purposed in your heart to give, not grudgingly or necessity (out of pressure or distress) Verse 7a

3. Be a cheerful giver - One who God loves! OH MY! WHAT A THOUGHT!! IT PLEASES GOD! Verse 7b

4. God will supply ALL your needs Verse 8 His grace will abound (abundance of grace) toward you! You having all Sufficiency (enough)

Read Verses 9-15 Paul drives the points home!

Verse 11 “while you are enriched in everything for all liberality” means this ......while you have been made rich at this time by God’s blessing it has been given to you so you can give to others generously so they can be blessed!! (another example of giving equality) (so we all can give thanks to God!)
