1 Corinthians 11:23–30 (ESV)
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread,
24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.
28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.
Examine yourself
11:27–30 In context
to eat the bread and to drink the cup of the Lord
“in an unworthy manner”
is to be understood in light of Paul’s sharp rebuke
for their behavior that humiliated
the poorer members of the church (11:17–22).
To shame others and to show contempt
for the church of God (11:22)
is to be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord,
which means to be liable for the death of Jesus
by profaning what the meal stands for
To partake in an unworthy manner is to sin against Christ
Note: The Apostle Paul had to deal with this church of how they came to the Lord’s table with issues with one another
One of the things that the body of Christ
have not mastered as individual believers
and that’s examining yourself
Watch in the church
How people can see Everything wrong with
The Church – The Pastor – The Choir – The Ushers – The Deacons
But NEVER see themselves
Once again
we love looking out the window as christians
but not in the mirror
And the only way
we can examine ourselves
is through the word of God
What the word of God does is
Tell you about yourself, Expose you to yourself, to Help you to become a better self “.
11:26
The gospel is presented through the service of Communion
as the elements are explained
They point to His physical Incarnation
Sacrificial death, Resurrection, and coming kingdom.
11:27, 29
in an unworthy manner. I.e.,
ritualistically, indifferently,
with an unrepentant heart,
a spirit of bitterness, or any other ungodly attitude.
In (Luke 24:24–32)
“And he went in to tarry with them. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them….” A few days before He had eaten the Passover with His own, now these are two other disciples, and here is the first time after His resurrection He is observing the Lord’s Supper. “And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.” That was a wonderful time to have Jesus present for the meal!
In the meal He takes the bread, He breaks it, He blesses it, He gives it to them. “And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us …” (Luke 24:24–32). He had a meal with them. Then what did He do? He revealed Himself. That was the Lord’s Supper.
when we observe the Lord’s Supper, He is present. Yes, He is!
This is not just a symbol
It means you must discern the body of Christ
You have bread in your mouth
but you have Christ in your heart.
May God help us to so come
to the table that Jesus Christ
will be a reality to us
God forgive us for making it a dead, formal ritual!
Verse 27 --- Those guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord were those who despised a poorer member by utter disregard for his need
Note: Thus to sin against another believer is to sin against Christ
Verse 27 ----- They should seek out the wronged brother and ask his forgiveness.
Statement: You say well “ what they don’t know won’t hurt them but what they don’t know can hurt you…….
Statement: I think people actually believe when they are running PEOPLE, THE CHURCH that God is not actually present and hearing them…..
Only then could a true spirit of worship flourish [ REPENTANCE HEART ]
Verse 28 ---- These came to the remembrance of Christ’s work of unity and reconciliation (cf. Eph. 2:15–16) with a trail of deeds that had produced disunity and alienation! If these would examine (dokimazetō, “test to approve,” 1 Cor. 11:28) themselves, they would see that they lacked God’s approval (dokimoi, v. 19) in this behavior.
Example: Job chapter 1 & 2, Job didn’t do anything wrong, or have a unrepented heart. That was the sovereignty of God.
Verse 29 ---- Coming to the Lord’s Supper without that sin confessed brought judgment on the guilty participants. Only by recognizing (diakrinōn, “properly judging”) the unity of the body of the Lord—and acting accordingly—could they avoid bringing “judgment” (krima) on themselves.
Verse 30 --- What that judgment entailed was then explained by Paul. In brief, it was sickness and death (cf. 10:1–11). The solution was self-examination (diekrinomen, 11:31; cf. vv. 28–29; 5:1–5; 10:12), self-discipline (9:27), and promoting of unity. The alternative was God’s judging (krinomenoi, 11:32), which was a discipline that they were then experiencing. This was not a loss of salvation, but of life (cf. 5:5)
Note: 3 things you can do to avoid experiencing the Judgement of God

1st Conviction — of What YOU DID wrong

2nd Confession — That YOU are Wrong

3rd Correction — To Get Wrong RIGHT
