A Dictionary of Christ and the Gospels (1. Ἀθετεῖν)
to render or consider invalid, to set aside something laid down, to bear oneself toward a thing as if it were not, to ignore
Stronger than hate because it puts oneself above.
Consequences when we despise
We become Barren
David and Miachal 2 Samuel 6:16 “Now as the ark of the Lord came into the City of David, Michal, Saul’s daughter, looked through a window and saw King David leaping and whirling before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart.”
What we despise we can lose
1 Samuel 2:30 “Therefore the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the Lord says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.”
We will be lightly esteemed
1 Samuel 2:30 “Therefore the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the Lord says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.”
Brings down wrath
2 Chronicles 36:16 “But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against His people, till there was no remedy.”
we miss what God is doing or miss out and wander
Hebrews 12:5 “And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;”
Numbers 11:20 “but for a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have despised the Lord who is among you, and have wept before Him, saying, “Why did we ever come up out of Egypt?” ’ ””
Numbers 14:31 “But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised.”
Isaiah 53:3 “He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.”
we miss his blessings and goodness and instead experience the curse
Malachi 1:6 ““A son honors his father, And a servant his master. If then I am the Father, Where is My honor? And if I am a Master, Where is My reverence? Says the Lord of hosts To you priests who despise My name. Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’”
we become like the pharisees
Luke 18:9 “Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:”
what you love you won’t despise
Matthew 6:24 ““No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
Proverbs with the word despise
Proverbs 14:2 “He who walks in his uprightness fears the Lord, But he who is perverse in his ways despises Him.”
Proverbs 3:11 “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor detest His correction;”
Proverbs 15:32 “He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, But he who heeds rebuke gets understanding.”
Even Jeremiah despised his life at one time.

14 Cursed be the day in which I was born!

Let the day not be blessed in which my mother bore me!

15 Let the man be cursed

Who brought news to my father, saying,

“A male child has been born to you!”

Making him very glad.

16 And let that man be like the cities

Which the LORD—overthrew, and did not relent;

Let him hear the cry in the morning

And the shouting at noon,

17 Because he did not kill me from the womb,

That my mother might have been my grave,

And her womb always enlarged with me.

18 Why did I come forth from the womb to see labor and sorrow,

That my days should be consumed with shame?
