Psalm 100:1–5 KJV 1900
1 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. 2 Serve the Lord with gladness: Come before his presence with singing. 3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: It is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, And into his courts with praise: Be thankful unto him, and bless his name. 5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; And his truth endureth to all generations.
Introduction:
Psalm 100 is a simple and beautiful hymn inviting God’s people everywhere to enter into worship with thanksgiving and praise. The whole psalm speaks of joyful response to life, seeking to praise God for all God has done and is.
Imperative verbs invite adoration of the LORD by all the earth: Make a joyful noise, worship, come! The word worship can also be translated serve. It is used in Deuteronomy to mean walking in the LORD’s way, loving him, and keeping his commandments (Deut 6:13; 10:12-13)
Deuteronomy 10:12–13 NASB95
12 “Now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require from you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the Lord’s commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good?
Deuteronomy 6:13 NASB95
13 “You shall fear only the Lord your God; and you shall worship Him and swear by His name.
Some places in the Psalms call for us to “be still, and know that [he is] God” Ps. 46:10, to come before him with a sense of reverent awe. And then there are psalms like this one. Where God has his hand on the volume knob, and He’s cranking it up! “Shout triumphantly.” Make a joyful noise! Turn it up!
Psalm 46:10 ESV
10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
TURN UP-PRAISE—v. 1
We praise what we enjoy because the delight is incomplete until it is expressed it in praise.
John Piper
A. Praise—“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” Do not make excuses or complaints, but make a joyful noise of praise and thanks.
B. Person—“Unto the Lord.” Why praise the Lord? The most important reason: He has saved us from sin—Ps. 103:3
Psalm 103:3 KJV 1900
3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases;
C. Places—“All ye lands.” All God’s people should praise Him; everyone who has breath should thank Him—Ps. 150:6
TURN UP-SERVICE—v. 2
We serve him with gladness because we do not bear the burden of meeting his needs. Rather, we rejoice in a service where he meets our needs.
John Piper
A. Serving—“Serve the Lord with gladness.” The Bible speaks of joy through salvation—Ps. 51:12 of our joy being full—1 John 1:4
1 John 1:4 NASB95
4 These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete.
Psalm 51:12 NASB95

Genesis 2:7 NASB95

Giving is true having, as the old gravestone said of the dead man, “What I spent I had, what I saved I lost, what I gave I have.”
Charles Spurgeon
