Tonight we continue looking at our enemy. “Why?” Because we are at war and for too long we have neglected to face that reality, we’ve ignored it, and we have grown complacent. Now we are paying for it. Tonight we are looking at the “Sin of Satan”. Let’s begin by discussing....

What led to Satan’s sin?

The Bible calls him the “anointed cherub” and the highest of all created beings (Ezekiel 28:12-19)
Ezekiel 28:12–19 KJV 1900
12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. 14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. 16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. 17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. 18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. 19 All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.
He was second only to God in authority and power
His privileges were unparalleled
He was perfect In wisdom, as far as a created being could be (ez. 28:12)
He had a work given to him alone by God (Ez. 28:14)
He had perfect character and conduct (ez. 28:15)
Yet he still sinned against God
Let’s examine what led to his sin further by looking at...

What his sin involved

1 Timothy 3:6 - a verse in the midst of a section of Scripture outlining the qualifications of a pastor, it reads very interesting...
1 Timothy 3:6 KJV 1900
6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
He was so full of himself, he tried to exalt himself above God (Ez. 28:17)
Interesting fact:
The words “Sin” and Pride” each have the letter (word) “I” in the middle
In Daniel 4, Nebuchadnezzar uses the word “I” 17 times!
What does this tell us? Pride is the root of all sin
The pride of Satan can be seen in 5 “I wills” found in Isaiah 14:12-14:
“I will ascend into heaven” - He was not content to dwell in the second heaven with the other angels, he wanted to be equal with God
“I will exalt my throne above the stars of God”
The stars = the angelic host
He wanted to rule over the angels
“I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north”
Congregation = meeting place
Mount = temple site on the north side of Jerusalem
Basically, Satan wanted to rule over Israel, and share in the Millennial rule of God upon the earth
“I will ascend above the heights of the clouds”
Clouds represent in Scripture the glory of God
THERE WAS A CLOUD THAT FILLED THE TEMPLE, AS EXPRESSION OF God’s glory and presence
Satan wanted the glory which belonged to God
The final “I will” of Satan sums it all up:“I will be like the Most High”
The Title/name “Most High” = “possessor of heaven and earth”
Satan wasn’t content to have control simply over the earth before Adam
He wanted to be like God, to have the authority which God has over all of creation
Church listen to me, sin is never satisfied! Sin is a thirst that is never quenched, a hunger that cannot be filled, and a desire that will never be met. Sin is a prison, but praise God there is a way out!
We’ve seen what led to his sin, what his sin involved, now let’s see...

The Results of Satan’s sin

.It confirmed his wickedness, along with the angels which followed him
John 8:44“44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
1 John 3:8 “8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”
Revelation 12:3–4“3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.”
He was cast out of his position and became the archenemy of God and His purposes
He became the prince of this world
John 16:11 “11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.”
He set his sight upon destroying man who God had set as his crowning glory to have dominion over the earth. TO do this he tempted Adam and Eve and introduce sin into the earth and the Human race(Gen. 3) bringing about the fall of humanity into sin.
“Pastor, how can we summarize this?”
Maybe this will help: What is the result of you working? You paycheck, or put it this way, your “wages.” We can summarize the result of Satan’s sin by looking at its impact on humanity: Romans 6:23
Romans 6:23 KJV 1900
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Satan’s sin did not cause humanity to sin, but it did introduce the practice of sin into the universe. Even when they were tempted to sin, Satan was only cause of their temptation, not their sin. When we sin today we do son on our own. The old argument “The devil made me do it” is a lie! He only tempts us to sin, when we sin, guess what it is becasue of our pride. “God doesn’t know what is best.” or “I know I shouldn’t, but I want to.”
This is our enemy. We need to know him. We need to be ready to fight him. How? Ephesians 6:10
Ephesians 6:10 KJV 1900
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
