Behold the King: Carring for the Outcasts
Notes
Transcript
And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother laid, and sick of a fever.
And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.
When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
Gospel on the Go Part 3
Gospel on the Go Part 3
The first three miracles in Matthew represent three groups of religious outcasts.
The leper
The gentile/slave
The woman (mother-in-law)
This has been used to combat the idea that Peter was a Roman Catholic Pope. To have a mother in law without a wife defeats the point. The fact that Peter was married for most if not all of his ministry is revealed to us by Paul
Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?
Husbands and wives are one of the greatest pictures of Jesus and the church. To worship God as a team is a great benefit.
"At the core of Faithway, we strive to glorify, God, live out the Gospel of Christ, and help people on their Faithway journey.”
This passage shows us Jesus’ example of fulfilling that mission.
The Power

His touch
Matthew—All Authority in Heaven and on Earth Picture Three: The Woman
women were placed behind screens, to the rear, as in modern Muslim mosques.
Jesus cannot physically touch you today, but He can spiritually through His Spirit. To receive life you must first place your faith in Christ.
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
His word
Matthew records for us the fact that many came to Jesus for healing. Many of these were physical but all were in need of something far greater.
The Redeemer had come.
He healed with His word.
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
The People
The People
As we study Jesus’ life and actions through the Gospel of Matthew, we will find that Matthew focuses on Jesus’ compassion for outsiders. I wonder if this was because Matthew himself was an outsider when Jesus found Him.
Jesus had shown grace to a leper, a Gentile soldier, and now He shows grace to another group of individuals that were considered second-class within Judaism, women.
In some Jewish tradition (as well as some ultra conservative Baptists) touching a woman in the manner Jesus did was banned and would make you unclean.
Craig Blomberg, Matthew, vol. 22, The New American Commentary (Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 1992), 143.
Peter’s Mother-in-Law was most likely the first female disciple. The term serve is the greek word diakoneo which often distinguished someone that is performing a act of humble service specifically identified as a follower of Christ.
In Mark 1:21,29 we are told that Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law on the Sabbath.
The Lord doth build up Jerusalem: He gathereth together the outcasts of Israel.
The Lord had come to gather the outcasts.
The demon possessed and all that were sick
Evil is a fact. If God did not create it, where did it come from? It started in the Garden of Eden. The wicked one introduced evil into the world through his personal pride.
If someone can influence another individual through hypnosis, it stands to reason that a devil can influence a person that opens themself up to it.
When Jesus died the curtain was torn in two. Now the Holy of Holies is available to all who believe in Him.
The Purpose
The Purpose
Surely he hath borne our griefs, And carried our sorrows: Yet we did esteem him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
Jesus came and proved that He was the awaited Messiah by his works, words, and even simple actions that fulfilled prophecies about the Messiah.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
