The High Priestly Prayer

Our High Priest
Our High Priest
25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.
27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.
Even though we often label the prayer Jesus models for us in Matthew 6 as the Lord’s Prayer, this prayer could more appropriately be labeled the Lord’s prayer.
John MacArthur tells us that this is an inside look into the intercession that Jesus makes for us at the right hand of the Father, until the time of His return
Prayer as it comes from the saint is weak and languid; but when the arrow of a saint’s prayer is put into the bow of Christ’s intercession it pierces the throne of grace.

Here we are brought into the Trinitarian relationship, the communion between the Son and the Father. This is the only recorded prayer, of any length, from Jesus 30+ years here on this earth. This is a holy moment
Hour of Glory
Hour of Glory
John 2:4 “4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.””
John 7:30 “30 So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.”
John 12:23 “23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.”
His hour includes both suffering and glory, humiliation and exaltation
He asks to be given the proper acknowledgement that has always belongs to Him, while for a time He has laid it down to serve and save His people
claim to deity
praise no other God
8 I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.
11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another.
claims authority over all flesh, even those who will arrest, condemn, and crucify Him
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Amillennialism - we are in the millennial reign of Christ
questioned about casting out the demons by Satan
Matthew 12:29 “29 Or how can someone enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house.”
Revelation 20:1–7 “1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. 2 And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while. 4 Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrecti…”
He exercises complete authority to build His church by the sufficiency of His blood for their sins and sets them free from sin and death by revealing to them His glory in the gospel, something that Satan does not want to happen but is powerless to stop because Jesus reigns
18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Eternal Life and Glory
Eternal Life and Glory
gives eternal life to all whom the Father has given them, sufficient sacrifice and propitiation clears their sin debt for all time and appeases the wrath of God for that sin
44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Romans 2:11 “11 For God shows no partiality.”
Acts 10:34 “34 So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality,”
That is no favoritism - Paul is no more a fit candidate for salvation as the thief on the cross.
But what is eternal life?
knowing God in Jesus Christ, an experiential knowledge, intimate, personal
33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”
why is this knowledge of God eternal life?
Luke 20:38 “38 Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.””
11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
personal intimate knowledge of Jesus is knowledge of God which is eternal life
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
Jesus is the only one in the flesh who rightly magnifies God by the work He accomplished - He fulfilled the law and manifested the love of God
This is even said before the cross happens - He does not come in attempt, He comes to surely and completely accomplish the will of God - and thereby recognizes what is rightly His, what was rightfully His before the world began
2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
