Elements of the Gospel Call

Facts of the Gospel

All have sinned
Romans 3:10–11 “10 as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one; 11 There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God;”
No one is righteous
No one understands
No one seeks God
Analogy
Throwing a Baseball towards the North Pole
Biblical Truth
Not only are you short of doing right, but you don’t even understand what is right, and you don’t seek for it anyway
The penalty for our sin is death
God judges the sinful, and rewards the righteous
John 3:36 ESV
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
Matthew 25:46 ESV
46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Jesus Christ died to pay the penalty for our sins, and rose from the dead.
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 ESV
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Christ died to pay for sin of those who would believe
Christ rose on the third day, proving that He truly was the Son of God

Invitation to Respond

Revelation 22:17 ESV
17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.
Mark 1:15 ESV
15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Invitation to Respond is given in a couple ways
Call to Believe
Call to Repent
Both
Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine (Second Edition) 2. Invitation to Respond to Christ Personally in Repentance and Faith

Therefore, any genuine gospel proclamation must include an invitation to make a conscious decision to forsake one’s sins and come to Christ in faith, asking Christ for forgiveness of sins.

A Promise of Eternal life and Forgiveness

When present the Gospel, one must make clear what the Gospel promises to one who comes in repentance and faith
Forgiveness or Justification
Romans 3:25 ESV
25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
Eternal Life
John 11:25–26 ESV
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
