Zechariah Part 19: The Shepherds

Text: Zech. 10:4-6.

Intro:

Vs 3, God’s Anger With The Shepherds

Shepherds - he-goats (Respect our elders)

the language of shepherds in the Bible (Ps. 23, Is. 53:6, Ps. 100:3.) Why its used?

sheep are dumb animals that need to be guided, fed, maintained, and watched out for.

extreme care for sheep

Roll over, too much fur, not load bearing animals

“wander” without a shepherd, sheep wander.

“afflicted” open to attacks from predators without a shepherd.

God’s always had a problem with the shepherds.

Ezek. 34:2.

even in Jesus’ time

so He decides to be their shepherd Ezek. 34:10-11.

Jesus is the good Shepherd, John 10:11.

he does his shepherding through the Holy Spirit

He does His shepherding by appointing other shepherds

Eph. 4:10-14.

The Elders Charge (1 Pt. 5:1-4)

Protect against false teaching

see to the spiritual benefit of souls

manage God’s household well

speak the truth

settle disputes

Dont give them a hard time. they deal with things you dont know and have greater responsibility than we sometimes realize (Heb. 13:17)

Vs 4

from Him

the Cornerstone

cornerstone is the stone used in starting to build

Messianic: Ps. 118:22, Mt. 21:42.

the tent peg

gives stability to keep a tent up (the small tent in out front yard)

Messianic: Is. 22:23.

The Battle Bow

military strength

though it wont be the type we think of

Jesus kingdom doesn't operate like that, John 18:36.

But He still fights as one in battle

Col. 2:15.

1 Cor. 15:25.

and we cannot forget how he is depicted in Rev. 19:11.

never forget we don't worship an wimpy, want to be your boyfriend, jesus.

the spiritual battle is still very much a battle even if we cannot see it.

Every ruler together?

the hebrew verb and adverbs here seem to imply that all of these things will come together and converge into one. that is the Priest King Jesus

Vs 5

“They” “Mighty men”

giborrim - mighty, vigorous, champion

you could have a dual prophecy here, each of these terms referring to different people that find their ultimate end in Jesus

the Hebrew makes it sound as all of these are converging into one
