Root 1: Christian Family Life Flows Forth From Being Filled With The Spirit
Grasping the context
Why can’t we just start in verse 22?
Why can’t we just start in verse 21?
Be Filled with the Spirit (v18)
This is the only verb in the sentence.
All of the other English “verbs” are actually participles in greek.
Being Subject to one another
Submission is a military term that comes from classical Greek. The simple meaning is to “come in line under”, but it generally was used to designate rank. Like a soldier submits to his commanding office. That’s the gloss meaning of the word.
But, as John MacArthur points out in his commentary, being submissive is a regular part of the Christian life for all Christian. Piper notes this as well in one of his sermons on this passage.
The Bible regularly commands Christians to go about their lives behaving as though other people are more important than they are.
The Spirit produces this way of living among Christians, in which we live our lives as though other people are more important.
Ephesians 4:1-2 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, exhort you to walk worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,”
Philippians 2:3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or vain glory, but with humility of mind regarding one another as more important than yourself, not merely looking out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.
Christian Family Life Flows Forth From Submission to the Lordship of Jesus Christ
Being Filled With the Spirit brings about submission to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:3: The mark of being filled with the Spirit is bowing the Knee to the Lordship of Christ.
John 16:14 The Holy Spirit glorifies the Son.
The Lordship of Christ in the Christian Home
5:22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as TO THE LORD.
5:25 Husbands love your wives Just as Christ Loved the Church and gave Himself up for Her.
6:1 Children obey your parents in the Lord
6:5 Slaves, be obedient to those who are your masters, as to Christ
6:9 Masters do the same ting to them, giving up threatening, know that both Their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.
The Spirit-filled exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ is the Spiritual Root of a Christian Household.
Conclusion
Husbands, if you want to be a good head of your home, it doesn’t start with being a good husband, good father, good leaders, or anything else like that. It starts with being filled with the Spirit, and walking in submission to the Lordship of Christ.
Wives, if you want to be a godly wife it doesn’t begin first with your submission to the husband. It begins with being filled with the Spirit, and walking in submission to the Lordship of Christ.
