Meet Jesus

Kind, compassionate, powerful, great teacher, loves all, lovable
Last week… loved, betrayed, yet the lamb of the new covenant of forgiveness in his blood.
Today, disowned and falsely accused, yet he is the one willing to suffer on our behalf.

Disowned

Matthew 26:31–35 NIV
31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “ ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.” 34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” 35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.
Prediction (with hope)
Their loyalty would be tested
36-46 Immediate challenge / writing on the wall
Matthew 26:41 NIV
41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
47-56 Fulfilment
Matthew 26:56 NIV
56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
57-58 & 69-75 Peter’s denial … three times challenged, by servant girls and others standing there!
Matthew 26:73–75 NIV
73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.” 74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Matthew 16:24–26 NIV
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
Mark 8:38 “38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.””
Would we have done better?
Are we doing any better?
Disowned / denied / dishonoured illustration

When God was about to create man, says a Jewish legend, He took into His counsel the angels that stood about his throne. “Create him not,” said the angel of Justice, “for if Thou dost he will commit all kinds of wickedness against his fellow men; he will be hard and cruel and dishonest and unrighteous.” “Create him not,” said the angel of Truth, “for he will be false and deceitful to his brother-man, and even to Thee.” “Create him not,” said the angel of Holiness, “he will follow that which is impure in Thy sight, and dishonor Thee to thy face.”

Then stepped forward the angel of Mercy (God’s best beloved) and said: “Create him, our Heavenly Father for when he sins and turns from the path of right and truth and holiness I will take him tenderly by the hand, and speak loving words to him, and then lead him back to Thee.”

Falsely Accused

57-61 False witnesses
Matthew 26:59–61 NIV
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’ ”
Two witnesses
Deuteronomy 17:6 NIV
6 On the testimony of two or three witnesses a person is to be put to death, but no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.
Any credibility to the accusation?
Statements like:
Matthew 23:38 “38 Look, your house is left to you desolate.”
Matthew 24:2 “2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.””
Matthew 12:6 “6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.”
Matthew 21:12–13 “12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “ ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’””
gave it credibility.
John 2:19 NIV
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
and as a threat to Israel’s life of worship, people were keen for it to stick.
But it wasn’t credible, as Matthew says, it is false testimony, because Jesus in speaking of the temple was referring to his own death and resurrection.
John 2:21–22 NIV
21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
False accusation illustration
In the book of Genesis, Joseph was falsely accused of attempting to seduce his master's wife. His response serves as a powerful example of how to handle false accusations with integrity and trust in God's ultimate justice.
Caiaphas’ Question
Matthew 26:62–64 NIV
62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” 64 “You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Messiah was expected to restore temple
“Are you…” / “you have said so”
… the words are on your lips, bearing witness against himself (like Judas v.25), he says the only true words of the trial (no surprise to us)
“From now on…” fulfilment, immediate, not the second coming, but now through the cross, resurrection and ascension!
Son of Man…
Psalm 110:1 NIV
1 The Lord says to my lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”
David, Son of God, Messiah
Daniel 7:13–14 NIV
13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
Ironically, as these prophecies were coming to pass, people were crying out for Jesus to prophecy… and more than that, in the courtyard, while Jesus is being falsely accused, Jesus’ words to Peter were being fulfilled.

The willing one

Willing bearer of wrath
Matthew 26:39 NIV
39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
Matthew 26:42 “42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.””
Cup…
Psalm 11:6 “6 On the wicked he will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot.”
Psalm 75:8 “8 In the hand of the Lord is a cup full of foaming wine mixed with spices; he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth drink it down to its very dregs.”
Isaiah 51:17 “17 Awake, awake! Rise up, Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord the cup of his wrath, you who have drained to its dregs the goblet that makes people stagger.”
Isaiah 51:22 “22 This is what your Sovereign Lord says, your God, who defends his people: “See, I have taken out of your hand the cup that made you stagger; from that cup, the goblet of my wrath, you will never drink again.”
Jeremiah 25:15 NIV
15 This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.
Jeremiah 25:17 “17 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations to whom he sent me drink it:”
Jeremiah 25:28 “28 But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink, tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: You must drink it!”
Jeremiah 49:12 “12 This is what the Lord says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, why should you go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, but must drink it.”
Zechariah 12:2 “2 “I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem.”
Willing Suffering Servant
Isaiah 53:6 NIV
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Willing Ransom for many
Matthew 20:28 NIV
28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
fukushima 50, four shifts 50… 200. They faced the poison of radiation for the sake of their family, friends and neighbours.
In World War II, a soldier named Desmond Doss enlisted as a conscientious objector, refusing to bear arms but still serving as a medic. He risked his life to save 75 of his fellow soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa, embodying the principle of substitution and selflessness. This can help us understand Christ's substitutionary sacrifice for humanity, even in the face of opposition.
Jesus didn’t just risk his life, like Desmond, he gave his life to save us.
A slave is owned, trapped until they can pay their debt or someone else does.
We are the ones enslaved by sin, Jesus pays the slave price (death) so that we can be freed from sin, saved from condemnation.
Jesus pays that ransom, not to a third party, like the devil, but to God himself… he meets the just demands of God so that we might be saved.
Edmund and Aslan in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.
John 3:36 NIV
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
