Unholy and Holy Fear

“That’ll happen”- Colter
Psalm 112:1–2 NKJV
1 Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, Who delights greatly in His commandments. 2 His descendants will be mighty on earth; The generation of the upright will be blessed.
We are a church that will continue on the legacy of the Fear of the Lord
Multi generational, multicultural church united and bonded in the Fear of God
Unity and stability in the Fear of the Lord
The Fear of the Lord is His treasure
Where is your Treasure? there will your heart be also
Acts 9:31 NKJV
31 Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.
Walking in the Fear of the Lord, they were multiplied
All revivals that we have seen historically start with repentance first
In Fact in the beginning of the first century church started out of it
Acts 2:22–40 NKJV
22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know—23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. 27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’ 29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. 34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, 35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’ 36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” 37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.”
Recap:
Repent and let everyone of you be baptized
Be saved from this perverse generation
On that day 3,000 people were added to the church
That’s multiplication
They barely had the staff to run the church at that point
Revival always starts with repentance First
Revival takes place in the church first
2 Chronicles 7:14 NKJV
14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Humility is yielding to God
Something to Ponder:
What do you yield to?
to surrender or relinquish to the physical control : hand over possession of
What are you afraid of?
Holy Fear vs. Unholy Fear:
These are two very different things
This morning I want to explain the difference between the two
Fear: an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger (1): an instance of this emotion (2): a state marked by this emotion (3)anxious concern
Unholy Fear is dread and torment:
Apart from God people should have fear
Unholy fear is driven by anxiety, worry, and a lack of trust in God
PRIDE
Fear is the opposite of Faith
Without Faith it is impossible to please Him
unholy fear, which seeks to bind our trust and puts it in ourself
That we can do this life without God
For the unbeliever Hell should be Feared:
There is a very real place called hell
We all deserve to be there
Romans 6:23 says the wages of sin is death
Death or eternal separation from God
2 Thessalonians 1:8–9 NKJV
8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
Luke and Revelation call it a Lake of fire
Nirvana wrote a song called lake of fire
I remember them playing this on the live unplugged in New York album
I was looking in up to see who wrote it
“This song symbolizes the uncertainty of life, it doesn't matter where you go when you die, it's not your choice and it doesn't matter anyways.”
But it is your choice
I think the enemy has done such a great job of deceiving people in the comforting people with their pride that people have lost a general fear of eternity
Get them caught up into their own understanding of how this all ends
If you don’t choose God while you’re here on this earth, he’s not going to force you to choose him for all eternity
Going back to Fear, I was thinking about what does torment look like:
Torment to me is being in jail waiting to be sentenced for a crime
You don’t really know what you’re facing
People without Jesus have a very real sentence that they will have to carry out for the rest of eternity
Without Jesus we are deadman walking
We all deserve nothing but Judgment and Hell on our own doings
Ephesians 2:4–6 NKJV
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
Holy Fear is a new testament truth:
Not a spirit of Fear
2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
1 John 4:17–18 NKJV
17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
Holy Fear is not dreading or being afraid of God
Healthy fear is rooted in faith and trust, knowing that God is ultimately has our best interests at heart
Holy fear is being in awe, in reverence
Trusting Him with everything that you have that you are afraid of what it would look like without Him
Perfect love will remove Unholy Fear and Give you the Fear of the LORD
Before Jesus we stand in Fear to be accountable for the things we’ve done
Now we stand blameless by the blood of Jesus
Band:
I made a traffic stop on an elderly lady the other day for speeding on U.S. 166 Eastbound at Mile Marker 73 just East of Sedan, KS. I asked for her driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance. The lady took out the required information and handed it to me. In with the cards I was somewhat surprised (due to her advanced age) to see she had a conceal carry permit. I looked at her and ask if she had a weapon in her possession at this time.
She responded that she indeed had a .45 automatic in her glove box. Something — body language, or the way she said it — made me want to ask if she had any other firearms. She did admit to also having a 9mm Glock in her center console. Now I had to ask one more time if that was all. She responded once again that she did have just one more, a .38 special in her purse. I then asked her what was she so afraid of.
She looked me right in the eye and said, "Not a dang thing!"
Romans 8:31 NKJV
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
We have nothing to Fear:
This does not mean we abuse grace
Romans 8:1 NKJV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Jesus has paid the price for your past present and future sins but if you live in sin there is consequences for your actions:
Rob a bank
There is earthly consequences to sin
My Life without the Fear of the Lord
This is not a license to sin
There’s a whole nationwide movement
Galatians 5:1 NKJV
1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Do not entangle yourself again with your sinful nature
Fear of God will keep us from our sinful nature
When we come back to this we will talk about Holiness and How Godly fear gives us the desire to be Holy
Give you an opportunity:
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
1. Believe in Him a step of faith
Take another step of faith Commit to Him and watch what happens in your life
2. Get out of your chair and meet me down here
