16. But God kept them from recognizing him.
Introduction - One of the highlights of my years as a boy at home was when we took road trips.
List some Roadtrip memories here.
The bible makes comparisons of our relationship with Jesus to that of travel…..I’m gonna call it a roadtrip.
Difference in this roadtrip is you’re moving from one place to the next and not going back.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus speaks of two roads. One has a wide gate, a broad road and plenty of company, but it leads to destruction. The other has a small gate, a narrow road and few people on it, but it leads to life.
Jesus speaks of 2 roads in Matthew 7:13-14
Matthew 7:13–14 (NLT)
13. “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way.
14. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.
Our text tells us that the men in this narrative are “two of Jesus’ followers.” They had made their decision. They had made the right decision.
Jesus had been crucified and that’s all they knew. So, they were moving forward to put the events of the last few days behind them.
Luke 24:13 (NLT)
13. That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem.
These men started a Roadtrip and had Determined their Destination
There are a few things to consider when planning a road trip
1. Determine your destination
1. Determine your destination
Luke 24:13 (NLT)
13. That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem.
2. Talking the Talk…Walking the Walk
2. Talking the Talk…Walking the Walk
Luke 24:14 (NLT)
14. As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened.
NOTE: Some people just like to run their mouth. They are all Talk and No Action!
NOTE: It real easy to get hung up on the “stuff” that has happened in our lives. All some want to do is rehearse the pain over and over.
NOTE: NOT SO of these Follower’s of Jesus. They “talked about everything that happened”; but, they didn’t let it change their journey.
They were talking but they were walking!
The Next thing I want us to notice is….
3. Jesus is On Journey with Us!
3. Jesus is On Journey with Us!
Luke 24:15 (NLT)
15. As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them.
There were a few times in the Old Testament where God himself visited and spoke to his man/woman.
More often God sent messengers…Angels.
Mary was first visited by an Angel
Joseph was first visit by an Angel
However, within 9 months Jesus himself showed up!
He was with them the rest of the journey with this exception…
Luke 2:41–43 (NLT)
41.Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover festival.
42. When Jesus was twelve years old, they attended the festival as usual.
43. After the celebration was over, they started home to Nazareth, but Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents didn’t miss him at first,
Luke 2:44 (NLT)
44. because they assumed he was among the other travelers. But when he didn’t show up that evening, they started looking for him among their relatives and friends.
NOTE: BACK TO OUR ROADTRIP TRAVELERS
Luke 24:28–32 (NLT)
28. By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on,
29. but they begged him, “Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.” So he went home with them.
30. As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them.
31. Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared!
32. They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”
4. Even when you don’t know He’s there…Know He’s there
4. Even when you don’t know He’s there…Know He’s there
Luke 24:16 (NLT)
16. But God kept them from recognizing him.
FAITH - Forsaking All I Take Him
FAITH - Hebrews 11 1
Hebrews 11:1 (NLT)
1. Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.
Hebrews 11:27 (NLT)
27. It was by faith that Moses left the land of Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger. He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible.
Note: This FAITH VERSE is in reference to Moses who had prominence in the Kingdom of Egypt at his fingertips, but realize he was born for a higher call and purpose.
He gave up what he could see “Keeping his eyes on the one who is invisible.” This really paid off when he climbed Mt. Sinai and he met the one who was leading him “face to face as a man would speak to a friend.”

Dwight L. Moody’s favorite verse was Isaiah 12:2: “I will trust, and not be afraid.” He used to say: “You can travel first-class or second-class to heaven. Second class is, “What time I am afraid, I will trust.” First class is, “I will trust, and not be afraid.” ” That is the better way. Why not buy a first-class ticket?

Ps 118:9 is found in a Psalm which is signalized by the fact that it contains the middle verse of the Bible, namely, “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man”.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
